Dear Alba,
When you referred to the "31 Callaway Preachers", you may have been talking
about my booklet called "CALLAWAY BAPTIST PREACHERS 1789-1953" published in 1953
by Timothy Walton Callaway, D.D. --- First Baptist Church St.
Andrews Parish , Charleston, SC. It was published in 1953 by the Fuller E. Callaway
Foundation in LaGrange, GA (Troupe Co). Most of these preachers were descendants of the
four sons of Thomas Callaway--John, Jacob, Joseph, and
Isaac who went to Halifax Co. NC and later to Wilkes Co. GA.
in 1783. I counted 20-25 ministers listed in the booklet published by the Callaway Family
Foundation. My lineage is thru the Job (or Jobe) Callaway line--parents were John and
Bethany Arnold of NC in 1770. Jobe married Mary Smith and moved to Wilkes Co. GA. They
later moved from Wilkes Co. GA to Chambers and Autauga Co. AL and last to Coosa Co. AL
about 50 miles north of Montgomery, AL--town of Weogufka. (Ben Callaway and Polly Ann
Melton who had 20 children.). My grandmother was Missouri Iltiny Callaway--daughter of
Josiah Callaway-- (Rev. Benjamin William Callaway's brother). In one of the notes, it
mentioned that a son of Rev. Francis Callaway (of Wilkes Co) was a Rev. William Gadston
Callaway and his grandson, Rev. Francis Gadston Callaway. I think the nickname
"Gad" probably is short for "Gadston". A lot of the Callaways went to
MO and IL and some are descendants of Col. Richard Callaway who accompanied Daniel Boone
from NC to KY along with Col. Samuel Henderson-- !
who married one of Daniel Boone's daughters. I think that I sent Toni Callaway a copy
of my Preacher's booklet about a year ago. Sorry that I have no info linking your
Gideon and Frances Green to the Callaways or Calloway lines...............................
Sincerely,
Mickey L. Smith---Huntsville, AL
Still looking for the mother and siblings of Matthew D. Callaway. I believe
that the "D" in Matthews name stands for Derrixson. There was information
submitted for a early McWhorter book that Sarah Glenn McWhorter had married
Derrixson Galloway. Well we know she married Matthew D. Callaway. Maybe he
went by his middle name around family?
I have a copy of the pages of the Bible that belonged to Matthew's wife
Sarah Glenn McWhorter and it lists a William W. Callaway born January 24,
1776 died February 1860. I do not know where he was born or died but have
been told he died in Scott Co. MS. I believe that William was Matthew's
father. There is no listing for a possible mother. Maybe she had died
prior to Sarah getting the bible or maybe she did not know her.
I have also never been able to locate a marriage record for Matthew and
Sarah. Does anyone know when and where they were married.
I have posted the information from the Bible on my web site at
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~gtriller/index.html
Thanks,
Gayle
Does anyone have information on Larkin Callaway Sr. He is on the 1880
Bosque Co. TX Census. Could he possibly be the brother of Matthew D.
Callaway. Matthew's widow and some of his children were also living in
Bosque Co. TX in 1880
