Barbara, we do not use a complete date for the birth of Flanders Callaway
because we cannot document it. We use a "date range" of 1748-1752. The
only thing we have to judge his birth year is the fact that he served on a
jury, July Court 1769, Bedford Co, VA. That is his first appearance in
records. If the requirement for jury duty was that one must be 21 years
old, that would give a possible birth date of 1748. However, people in
this era may not have known precisely how old they were. Flanders' father,
James Callaway, died in 1767 in Bedford Co, VA. If you are comfortable with
the "December 9" part of his death date, I think the year 1752 is a better
fit than 1758, in the absence of documented fact.

Subject: [Callaway] Flanders Callaway
Trying to verify some data on Flanders Callaway, husband of Jemima
Boone,
and
son of James Callaway....... Need sources to find accurate information
on
birth and death:
"Some Boone Descendants of the St. Charles District", Pages 16 and 135
December 9, 1752 as birth date and Febuary 22, 1829 as death date (Draper
Mss. 23 C 112)
Page 108, "Jess M. Thompson's Pike County History" has December 9, 1758,
Virginia, and died August 19, 1824. Spraker uses the same ... but we
don't.
Our reasoning for using the December 9, 1752 as birth in OUR records:
"Boone Descendants" was written at a later date with more accessibility to
accurate information. Our reading about Flanders also indicates that he
was
quite a bit older than Jemima who born in 1762 which would make him
ten
years
older. The sources in either of the above books are not really clear
except
for the above death date.
Can anyone help me clear this one up?
