Is anyone researching the CALLAWAY families who
were in MS (specifically Choctaw and Winston counties)
and TX (specifically Anderson and Limestone counties)
from 1850 onward?
I am particularly interested in William CALLAWAY
and his possible sons Jesse, William J., Isaac, and
J.H.W. (I don't know what those initials stood for).
William was in Choctaw Co. MS in 1850 then moved
to Springfield, Limestone Co. TX where he evidently
died 1860-1870. Living nearby were his possible sons
J.H.W. CALLAWAY, Jesse CALLAWAY, and William J.
CALLAWAY.
In 1860 William J. CALLAWAY and Jesse CALLAWAY
were living next-door to one another in Magnolia, Anderson
Co. TX. The elder William CALLAWAY and J.H.W. CALLAWAY
were living next-door to one another in Springfield, Limestone
Co. TX. Jesse was dead by 1870 (killed in the Civil War?)
because his wife Lettie was living alone with her kids in
Palestine, Anderson Co. TX. William J. CALLAWAY was
also living in Pallestine in 1870. The elder William CALLAWAY
was dead by 1870 because his widow Hannah was living alone
in Limestone Co. TX (possibly with kids, I haven't seen the
entire page yet). I don't see J.H.W. CALLAWAY or his wife
Susan at all in TX, so I'm not sure what happened to them
in 1870.
Isaac CALLAWAY was in Winston Co. MS in 1850
and 1860. He and his wife Asenathe are buried in
the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery there. Isaac
served in the Civil War and died sometime between
1870 and 1900 (I haven't seen the 1880 census yet).
His grave has no marker so wasn't recorded with the
other graves in that cemetery when the locals
compiled a book. His sons James Monroe CALLAWAY
and Michael H. CALLAWAY and daughter Lettie were
all still living in Winston Co. MS in 1900. Lettie,
Michael, and their brother Lemuel are all buried with
their parents in the Antioch cemetery.
If anyone can help me figure out if these folks are really
all one family and the ancestry of the elder William CALLAWAY
I'd really appreicate it. I'm particularly interested in finding out
if he was the William CALLOWAY who was in Benton Co. AL
in 1840. That William did have a son named Isaac who
married Asenath GRAHAM, so it looks promising. The ages
and family make-up looks promising, too.
