George Callaway (b.1814 GA), David Callaway (b. abt. 1822 AL) and Silas Mercer Callaway
(b. 1830 AL) were allegedly brothers. The three came to California, it is said to mine for
gold, around 1850 and settled in areas along the Sacramento River. I have been unable to
trace their parentage and would appreciate any help. They are not listed in the Callaway
family association index. They are not listed in any
ancestry.com family trees.
George Callaway is listed in the 1840 census in Mobile, AL.
In 1850, George (with wife and children), Silas and a Robert Callaway (b. 1828 GA) are
listed together in the census in Mobile, AL. I believe Robert may have been Robert Byrd
Callaway, son of Clement II and Anna E. Spruell, who married Cynthia Edmonson. He stayed
behind in Alabama. I cannot locate David anywhere in the US and believe he may have been
en route to CA (family lore says via the isthmus).
In 1860 Silas and George (with his daughters) are settled in Sacramento County, CA. David
has settled, with wife Nancy (Mary?), in Sonoma county, CA.
Silas Mercer Callaway married Electa Ford (daughter of Jos. L. and Ruth Ford), had eight
children, and died in Courtland, Ca in 1900. One son was named William Byrd Callaway. The
middle name Byrd has been used through four generations.
George had four daughters: Sabrina Clara, Jeanne(?), Mary F., and Addie with his wife
Erebecca(?). He died before 1880. David had no children but lived with his neice Sabrina
in Stanislaus county after her husband, Robert Sydnor died in 1878. David died in 1900.
If any Callaway researchers can help me discover the parents of George, Silas, and/or
David Callaway I would be most grateful.
