Verlinder Calloway (Callaway) was born 23 Jan 1820, most likely in Decatur or Bartholomew
county, Indana, where her father acquired a good deal of land. He was from a West Virginia
plantation known as Trigger Run, located near Peterstown, Monroe county, WV. He was the
son of Zachariah Callaway and Ellender Boyd.
George Washington Paul is a mystery man, but his wife's Paul family connections lead
back to Monroe county, WV. and it's not outside the realm of possibility that he was
some connection to them, although his birth is listed as KY. Many of the boys from
Peterstown followed the survey parties into KY looking for lands. George's father may
have been one of them.
George Paul can be found in 1840 Decatur county, IND., 1850 in Des Moines county, Iowa;
and from 1852 to 1860 in Mahaska county, Iowa; in 1862 he is found on or near the Kennedy
wagon train, which included Harriet Ellis's family, the family of Joseph Paul,
descendants of the Ellison family of Monroe county, WV. Polly Ellison was Verlinder
Callaway's aunt.
George's son, Gabriel, was the oldest child. He married Harriet Ellis; not Martha
Ellis. Martha was married to a "Gay." Some have attached a Martha Harmon as
Gabe's second wife. I only show his second wife to be Mattie Ann Evan's; a former
southern belle, who's family lost everything in the Civil War.
Jeremiah Odel Paul was the son of Gabe Paul and Mattie Evans. He married Alta Viola
Thompson, daughter of James F. Thompson and Rachel Elizabeth Olney. I have some
interesting family stories collected for the Thompson family.
Alta Thompson nearly died as a child when their home collapsed in a mudslide. Her four
sisters were killed and her brother nearly went insane.
When Alta grew up she married Ode Paul. They had 11 children. James Odel Paul was their
3rd child. He was married to Phelma Lanoma New.
James and Phelma had 6 children who I will not list as some or all are still living. I am
in touch with more than one of their descendants. For additional information please post.
