Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I will post these by generations for both branches, simultaneously.
For example, this post will include the 1st and 2nd generations for
Peter. The next post will include the 1st and 2nd generations for
Joseph. Please watch the "Subject" line for the Callaway line of your
interest.

own name, suggesting that her husband had died.]

CALLAWAY/CALLOWAY OR CALAWAY/CALOWAY
It seems to make little difference how the name is spelled. Both main
lines use both spellings. Even those who came later from England
used both spellings.
The phone book for the county where my mother's Callaway relatives
lived shows listings under both spellings. They are all relatives.
The spelling using the single "L" is often used by those whose family
traces back to Sussex Co, DE. Why? Who knows! Families from that
area often awarded their children with three "given" names - such as
Mary Susanna Elizabeth Calaway.
It matters not how your family spells the name. You may find your
cousins in another state using a different spelling.
Even the State of Kentucky had a problem. They had to admit they
erred when they named CallOway Co, KY for Col. Richard CallAway.
FRET NOT over the spelling.

Yes that is my basic lineage you left a few holes out. You can find my
Calloway lineage on my Family Tree Maker home page. The address is:
http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/s/c/h/Christopher-E-Schultheis/index...
It lists about 6-7 generations of some of the Calloways I have.
Someone mentioned about the different spelling. I believe there to be no
difference. The Peter line spells it with an "O" and the Joseph line
spells it with an "A". I have even found that to not be entirely
consistent. So for those of you searching the surname make sure you check
both spellings.

Sorry. I said I would "shut up" but I forgot there was a request out
there for information on "Callaway Clan," by Bessie C. Hoffmeyer. I
am sitting here with a copy on my knee. Someone correctly stated
that this book makes the error of combining the Joseph Callway line
with the Peter Callaway line. If you are a descendant of Joseph
Callaway of Essex Co, VA, you do not need this book. There is
background on Thomas, William, Francis & Richard Callaway, sons of
Joseph - but a great deal of the information is old re-runs, and much
is erroneous.
If you are a descendant of descendants of Peter Callaway who settled
in Wilkes Co, GA c1783, you will find much of interest in this book.
Four brothers settled in Wilkes Co, GA soon after the Revolution.
They were Job Callaway (w. Mary), John Callaway (w. Bethany Arnold),
Joseph Callaway (w. Sabrina Morgan) & Joshua Callaway (w. Isabella
Graves Henderson); also with them was their nephew, Isaac Callaway,
Jr. (w. Mary (Polly) Barrett).
These are the families dealt with. There are facsimile reproductions
of several of the Callaway Family Bibles.
Mrs. Hoffmeyer is a descendant of Joseph and Sabrina Morgan Callaway,
and it is this line that is dealt with in more detail. Her branch
moved from Wilkes Co, GA to Whitfield County, GA in NW GA, just below
Chattanooga, TN. But, in dealing with this book, one must always
remember to delete in one's mind the references to the Joseph
Callaway of Essex Co, VA line. It can be misleading.
If there are other questions about this book, I will be happy to
respond to them.

Chris,
I noticed in your response to Lila you gave a lineage descending
from Joseph Callaway and wife "Catherine." Is there a source for
"Catherine" being the name of the wife of Joseph Callaway?
The lineage is confusing to me. Is the lineage you recited as
follows...?
I Joseph Callaway
II Joseph Callaway - md. Catherine
III A. Thomas Callaway
B. William Callaway
C. Francis Callaway
D. Richard Callaway
E. James Callaway
F. Elizabeth Callaway [Bramlett?]
G. Ann Callaway Stodgill [Sturgill]
After years of studying the records relative to Joseph Callaway
of Essex Co, VA, we have concluded that there is only one generation
of Joseph Callaway......and nowhere did we ever find a wife named for
him. If someone has found documented evidence that there were two
generations of Josephs, and one had a wife named Catherine, please
share this documentation with all of us.
Friends, more than 25 years ago, when a group of us with Callaway
ancestry, began our attempts to straighten out the Callaway family,
we discovered that there are two main branches of the family from
which a majority of United States Callaways descend. Peter Callaway
was an immigrant to Somerset Co, MD by 1663 (and may have been in VA
by 1649) and Joseph Callaway was in Virginia by about 1683.
We soon discovered that the two lineages were hopelessly
intertwined in DAR and other lineage society records, published works,
and we were all passing this misinformation to each other. None of
us could make any progress on our Callaway lines because of this.
Eventually we started "workshops" whereby 12 to 15 people would
gather for a full week at various state archives and read actual
public records. Over the years we visited the archives of Maryland,
Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky. We stayed
at each place for a full week, standing at the door each morning when
it opened, and being pushed out at closing time. After dinner, we
critiqued the day's work and made plans for the next day's work. In
this methodical way, we read a lot of records and gathered huge
amounts of documentation. Finally, it became clear that there were
definitely two main colonial Callaway families - unrelated on this
continent.
Many of you have seen Callaway charts proudly headed by an
ancestor known as "Thomas Callaway of Charles City County, Virginia."
Our research in Virginia colonial records uncovered land escheatment
records. In these is a record showing that "Thomas Callaway died in
this country with no heirs" !! - and thus, his land reverted to the
crown (King) and was re-granted to another person. Thomas Callaway
is nobody's ancestor! There is a large chart in existence which is
headed by the above Thomas Callaway, and this chart combines both
branches of the Callaway family as his descendants.
I will be happy to work with all of you on this mail list to
attempt to help you document your Callaway lineages.

HI Frank,
Got your GEDCOM and converted it so I could view it. I will study it more
intently over the next few days. At first glance it does not appear that I
will be able to help you.
There are two main Calloway lines in the US. One is from Peter Calloway in
MD and the other is from Joseph Calloway from VA. Both entered the US in
the mid to late 1600s. There is no known connection between Peter and
Joseph. I regret to say that I have little to no information on the Peter
line as I descend from the Joseph Line. I consider the Joseph line more my
expertise, if I have any at all.
Your Wm Calloway you say was born and married in Delaware. That makes me
believe that he is probably from the Peter line. The migration of the
Peter line is MD, DE, eastern VA & NC, and SC before finally to GA, AL, and
west from there. If you have heard of Calloway Gardens in GA, that is from
Peter's line.
Joseph's line appears to migrate from central VA, to western NC, TN, KY.
Also a branch went from NC to GA and then AL and further west. It gets
real confusing in GA and AL because both lines migrated to those areas
about the same time.
There is quite a bit of information on the World Family Trees from Family
Tree Maker. These are trees that people have submitted for inclusion on
CD. Now much of this information is wrong but at least it gives you a
starting point to prove or disprove.
I know none of this is much help but I thought I would let you know my
initial thoughts. I will get back with you in a few days to see if I can
find anything.
Chris.....
Hi,
I would like to hear what others have to say about the Callaway Clan, also.
This was one of the first books that I looked at for my Callaway family.
After looking through the Callaway Journal, I found that it refuted a lot of
what was in the Callaway Clan. The Callaway Clan mixed together two lines,
that of Francis and of Peter, according to the Callaway Journal.

Hi,
Most of my Calloway information comes from WFT, Internet, Surry Co, NC
Heritage book, and fellow researchers. Thats not to say that we are right.
It is a common practice to accept what someone else tells you as fact when
in reality it is thought or supicision. I have no absolute proof at this
time that proves my lineage prior to the 1800s and am relying on others for
that information. A preponderance of researchers appear to agree with the
lineage I listed.
I too am new to the list so do not know that this has been discussed. If
it has I would love to hear the ultimate conclusion. BTW, did you all know
about the Calloway Family Association? If not, it is on the Internet at
address:
http://www.lgc.peachnet.edu/callaway/cfa1.htm
They offer census records on line of all the Calloways. They also produce
a yearly journal that is for sale. I personally have not purchased any of
them but would imagine them to be a treasure trove of information.
Some of the basic information I have found, is there appears to be 2 lines
of Calloways that entered the US in the mid to late 1600s. They start with
a Peter Calloway from MD and a Joseph Calloway from VA. Most all Calloways
I have chronicled originate from these two lines. To my knowledge there
has been no connection or relationship made between the two.
I would love to hear from others on their thoughts. I have over 1000
Calloways in my database and would love to share and gather more. BTW, all
of my Calloways are from the Joseph line in VA. I have nothing at all on
the Peter line in MD.
Chris.....
I was recently surfing the net and stumbled across a book titled "Callaway
Clan" by Bessie C. Hoffmeyer. It was supposedly written in the 1940s and
is about the Callaway's of VA, GA, and TN. Is anyone familiar with this
book? If so I would love to hear about it to see if I should purchase it.
Thanks.
BTW, the site I found this book was http://www.higginsonbooks.com/
Thanks again,
Chris.....

Hi Everyone!
I am requesting information on a William Rodger CALLAWAY. He is the man
that our town is named after. He was born 31 Aug 1852 and died 7 Feb 1937.
Married Emma Ellen Ecclestone, dau. of W.T. Ecclestone of Hamilton, Ontario
in Sept 1878.
William was the son of Frederick William Callaway of Wiltshire, England and
Margaret Rodger of Crieff, Scotland. He had a brother, Samuel, whose career
was in the railway business. William worked with the railroad as well,
beginning at age 16.
If you have any further information regarding this particular man, I would
appreciate hearing from you. Our town will be celebrating its centennial in
a few years and I would like to gather the data now. Thank you!
