Hello,
I believe it is a good idea to post the list guidelines every now and again
so here they are:
1. When replying to a message, please "snip" (copy & paste) only the
relevant portions of the original message to yours. This saves time and
space for everyone including the RootsWeb archives. If you are a computer
"newbie" and need help with this, please contact me privately.
2. The following items should not be posted to the mailing list:
a.) Virus alerts
b.) Chain letters
c.) DNA project announcements - feel free to use the DNA mailing lists
for this
3. Since we are unable to see a person's face, or hear the tone of voice,
before posting a message, please ask yourself "Would I say this to the
person's face?" If the answer is no, try rewording the message.
4. Turn off any signature files you normally use before sending a post to
the list, particularly if the signature file is a list of surnames you are
researching. These signature lines produce false hits on a search
results list.
However, should you forget one of the above "guidelines", I'll send you a
friendly reminder by private e-mail. :-) See, it wasn't that long ago
that I was a "newbie" and remember all too well the blunders I made....
The RootsWeb/Ancestry message board that corresponds to our mailing list
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=surnames.callan
is "gatewayed" to our mailing list. This means that a copy of each post on
the message board will be sent to our mailing list. The messages are
easily identifiable because they begin with:
"This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list."
The best way to respond to the author is to use the link provided in the
message, which will take you to the post on the message board. While
you're on the board, please visit the "Links & Announcements" page for
posting guidelines and tips.
While the focus of this list is CALLAN genealogy, a friendly exchange of
helpful information (such as URL's, governmental postal addresses, etc.) is
always welcome. However, since the mailing list is archived by RootsWeb &
anyone (not just list subscribers) may access those archives, the posting
of personal mailing addresses is discouraged. This might be better
accomplished through a private message to the requesting party.
Okay, that part of it is over. If you have any questions, comments, or
suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me at:

Enjoy & good luck in your tree climbing!!!
