FYI: In the 1997 #2 issue of "Irish Roots" magazine published in Co. Cork,
Ireland, there appeared the following classified ad that contains a great deal of data
involving several countries that potentially could provide "just the right clue"
to a CALLAN researcher: Ad read: "Searching for the birthplace of my grandfather
James Aloysius CALLAN. James was born in 1868-69 in Ireland, county unknown. I do
remember Co. Cork being discussed. Parents of James were Hugh CALLAN and Katherine
MURPHY. Other siblings? James CALLAN immigrated to Canada before 1905. He listed his
occupation on marriage license in 1905 as bartender. In Bellevue, Alberta Province he was
a hotel manager and later a hoistman with West Canadian Collieries. James married Rose
Anne DIVISH at age 36 and had two sons: Lawrence and Patrick. James died in 1922 in
Vancouver, BC, Canada. He was a Roman Catholic, well-dressed and educated. Family photos
include one of a young man 20-30 years, address on!
back: Lawrence CALLAN, Mass Side, Manchester, England, 20 Seddon Street (brother/nephew
of James?) circa 1920s. Letters from 1930 refer to an Aunt in St. Paul, MN and an Uncle
in Los Angeles, CA, from James's son. Are these siblings of James? Reply to Colly
GRUCZELAK, 3532 W. Pacific Coast Hwy, Ventura, CA 93001, USA." (Note, I have no
connection to the individuals in this post. A search of Rootsweb did not turn up similar
post). Hope this helps someone.
