Hi! Cuz, we hope:
My CALLANS came from Dundalk, Co. Louth, IRE to Phila.
G,G, Grandfather Joseph CALLAN arrived, as the story goes, in 1844 AFTER the
burning of 2 Catholic churches. The burning were in May of 1844. The
"family" decided that CALLAN was too Irish and changed their name to
COLLINS, because, they thought, it sounded more Anglecan.
Fat chance with with their Irish accents, is my reaction.
So my CALLANS are sometimes COLLINS. My g,g, grandfather Joseph CALLAN
COLLINS ran a store near Center City on Gaskill and Baskin. That corner doe
not exist anymore.
In 1863 the Joseph CALLAN COLLINS family moved to Conshohocken, PA in
Montgomery County. Relatives still live there.
GG, grandfather's brothers James and Michael did join him in America, the
Phila area. It is not out of the question the brothers moved to NJ. Their
brother Peter did not come to to America and some if his decendants are
still in Ireland.
Does this help?
Peace,
Donna
