When my wife, Eleanor Jane Callan Roberts and I lived near Lambertville, in Hopewell
Twp., we looked through a lot of the old records, including those of St. John the
Devine Catholic Church. We analyzed the records of all the Callans we could find
there, probably including your ancestor. There were a number of early Callan family
patriarchs there, including: Henry Callan (m Elizabeth), James Callan (m Catherine
Reynolds), Hugh Callan (m Elizabeth McGregor or McGruder), Patrick Callan (m Ann
Sillery), and John Callan b ca 1815 (m Julia Cadey or Casey b ca 1821). The ones
with large numbers of Lambertville descendants seems to have been James, John
Patrick, and Hugh. Patrick Callan died 2 SEP 1901 of Cardiac neuraligo, Buried 5 SEP
1901 in St. John's RC Cemetery, he was a Private, part of Civil War Infantry Company
H, 6th Regiment NJ volunteers. He enlisted 19 AUG 1861 and was discharged 4 JUN
1863, according to Stryker's Manual of NJ P287, age at death was 72 and he has a
marker. As you know, Patrick and Ann or Anna had Charles A. Callan bapt 30 NOV 1868
who married Mary McAuliffe on 6 FEB 1895, who in turn had Charles Augustus Callan
(bapt 19 NOV 1899). Ann Sillery d 16 JUL 1907 at 74 years. It appears that Patrick
had other children, too. I can't find a Charles William Callan in our Lambertville
notes.
