New to this list - looking for help on some CALLAN families in
Lesmahagow and Cambusnethan.
In 1876, William CALLAN married Sarah BARNES and had a load of children.
In the 1901 census I find them in Lesmahagow on Nethertown Row in
Nethertown. Wm is a widower, wife Sarah died 3 days after a premature
daughter's birth, only weeks before this census. There are children
James, 21. Mary, 19. Annie, 10. Catherine 8, Maggie 6. William 4 and
Grace 2, the preemie died at age 8 days. There are certainly more
births, the gap between Mary and Annie is suspicious.
My interest is William, he MAY have been put into an Orphanage and
adopted out....that is what we are searching for. I can certainly
understand putting some of the younger children in an institution, as a
Coal miner, he hardly had any way of taking care of them.
Ideas gratefully accepted, we do have a possible Orphanage, but no proof
of his identity. This boy, William was adopted out and came to America
by 1910.
Mary CALLAN married David SWAN in Lesmahagow, 1903, we are hoping to
find current day relatives and see if they know anything of this
adoption story. Just beginning research on the SWAN line.
