In the book,"Marriages and Deaths From Lynchburg, Virginia Newspapers
1794-1836" by Lucy Harrison Miller Baber, on pg. 159, it states, "Stephen
Callahan died at Marseilles, France. U. S. Consul at Marseilles. The Lynchburg
Press, July 27, 1819, p. 3."
I went to a microfilm copy of the newspaper mentioned and this is what I
found,
"Mr. Stephen Cathalan, United States Councel ar Marseilles, died at that place
on the 21st of May, after a short illness. [ Mr. Noah, in his travels speaks
of this gentleman, who it appears is a native of France ____________ force, in
Mr. N's opinion, ought not to hold a commission under this government.]"
My questions are, is Stephen Callahan and Stephen Cathalan the same man? Who
is Mr. Noah? Is there anyone out there that has any information on any of
these people, I would love to hear from you? Any ideas on how to check into
this further?
Thanks in advance,
