FYI. The Bureau of Land Management web site for Official Land Patents
Records is at <
www.glorecords.blm.gov/> It shows land patent records for
the period 1820-1908. The site documents the transaction of land parcels in
what is now Jackson County to Benjamin Callaghan in 1834, 1835, & 1841;
John Callaghan in 1835 & 1839; to Owen Callaghan in 1835; and to William O.
Callaghan in 1834, 1837, & 1841. Much interesting info at this site.
The earliest info I could find on this Callaghan family was in the
spiral-bound booklet "Ohio Lands - Chillicothe Land Office - 1800 to 1829"
by Marie Taylor Clark, CG. 1984. Published by Heritage House, Indianapolis,
IN 46239. This resource shows a purchase of 166.59 acres by Calaghan,
Jno on 12Feb1812. Range 17, Township 7, Section 4SE. It also shows a
23Dec1816 purchase of 238.16 acres by Calaghan, Jno & Wm. (probably John,
jr). Range 17, Township 7, Section 18NW.
For those folks interested in the Callaghan-McClure connection, it is to be
noted that this same document lists a sale on 27Dec1816 of 160 acres to
McCluer, J. Range 18, Township 7, Section 12NE. Also listed is a 4Mar1811
purchase of 168.56+ acres by McClure, Saml. Range 17, Township 7, Section
29SW. There are 4 other purchases by a McClure, S and/or McClure, Saml in
1811, 1813, 1816 &1829. These purchases are in Range 17, Township 7 and
Range 18, Township 5.
The 1830 Census for Jackson County shows a Samuel McClure in Bloomfield Twp
and 2 John McClures in Lick Twp. I hope this info is helpful to some of
you Callaghans!
