In an attempt to further establish Aghalurcher as the Callaghan homeland, I
researched the Tithe Applottment records which were taken in Aghalurcher in
1834.
The tithes were taxes collected from all occupiers of land, irrespective of
religion and were used to support the Church of Ireland and were greatly
disliked by the largely Catholic population.
These records show two Callaghan's, Denis Callaghan with 28 acres, and
Patrick, with 24 acres.
The complete record showed: 18

The total area of Altigohan, as it was spelt, was 376 acres, 3 rods and 28
perches, of which the Callaghan's held about 17%, the total tithes were four
pounds, two shillings and eleven pence.
There were no other Callaghan's, at any other townlands, in this parish in
these records. It is likely that one of these Callaghan's is the father of
Phillip Callaghan.
This puts our Callaghan's at this location in the early 1800's and almost
certainly earlier.
The Griffiths and the Applottment records show Callaghan families renting or
owning lots 7 and 9 in both records, even though in the years between 1833
and 1862 the lots had changed in size and the number of families on the
townland had grown from 19 to 27.
It is a reasonable assumption that lots 7 and 9 are the long term homes of
our Callaghan ancestors and that we have descended from either the Denis or
Patrick Callaghan shown in the above records.
The Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1834\35 give some insight into the living
conditions for the locals and I have copied some sections from that report. 19
Habits of the People; Houses
The cottages or farm houses of the better class of farmers in this parish
are, comparatively speaking, very comfortable. They are generally built of
stone and thatched (in a few instances they are roofed with slates) and are
of one storey and, although far from what they ought to be, still have an
air of comfort and cleanliness. The cottiers and labourers live in the most
wretched way in mud huts, in many instances without either window or
chimney, with, in almost every case, an offensive heap of liquid manure at
the very entrance to their miserable abodes. They still appear happy and
contented, and it is really surprising to see what healthy stout children
issue from the midst of smoke and filth, brought up by their parents almost
in a state of nudity in all weathers and entirely fed on potatoes.
Modes of Living
The use of meat is confined to the best class of farmers. The peasantry
content themselves with meal and potato and occasionally fish. The fuel in
use is turbary and bog wood, the latter also serving for candles when split
into thin lengths. The average number in a family is 6, and it is customary
as soon as children of a family grow up for them to marry, usually at an
early age, and begin the work on their own account, building mud huts
wherever a few acres are to be obtained, and struggling through life in
poverty and wretchedness, but apparently contented and cheerful. There have
been many instances of longevity, such as individuals reaching 100 years and
upwards. The late J. Hare of Nutfield lived all his lifetime in this parish
and he reached the great age of 100 enjoying all his facilities to within 2
or 3 years of his death
