A new message has been added to Callahan re: Calahan, from Co. Cork to Renfrew.
Elizabeth Calahan (Callahan) We are searching for the origin of our Irish born ancestor,
Elizabeth Calahan who immigrated to Canada. Our records, from a variety of sources tell us
she was born, 11 July 1810 (or 11 January 1811?) in Castlemartyr, County Cork. Elizabeth
was married on Ash Wednesday, 1831 at Queenston (now Cobh?) to Robert Robertson Smith,
a Scot from Aberdeenshire. One record states, that Robert with his wife Elizabeth, sailed
on the Champlain to Quebec in September of 1831. Elizabeth died 17 August 1870 and is
buried in Renfrew County, Ontario. The Ontario Census returns for 1851, indicate that a
Catherine Calahan, very likely Elizabeths widowed mother was living with the Smith
family, in Refrew County, Ontario. The Census information for Catherine provides the
following: birth - Ireland, religion - Church of England, age - 58, birthdate - June 16,
& widowed. Catherines birthdate works out to 16 June 1794. Any information on the
County Cork connections!
