I'm hoping someone searching Callahan in Philadelphia
will happen across a James Callahan that doesn't
belong to them and might be mine...
James was born in 1814 somewhere in Ireland and lived
in the Philadelphia area approximately 1860 until his
death in 1895. He had at least one son, name unknown.
Younger brothers Matthew and Phillip Callahan were in
Sacramento Ca by 1860 census. They both ran brick
making businesses so may have other family in the
brick making business from Ireland or England.
Another brother, Thomas came to US, but reportedly
drowned crossing a river shortly after arrival.
Matthew mentions his brother,James as having "recently
passed away in Philly at age 81" and that he was "well
cared for by his son to the last." This letter was
written in 1895.
Matthew was reportedly the youngest of either 19 or 13
children and other possible sibling names are Robert,
Bessie(Elizabeth?)Ann, Margaret.
Not sure where in Ireland the family was from.
Matthew was reportedly born in Manchester Eng. while
his mother was visiting a sister in 1824. I am
assuming he spent time in Donegal before coming to the
US because the letter was to his brother in law in
Inishowen and he mentions a number of people he saw
"before I left home".
Any clues, leads, suggestions greatly appreciated.
Helen Callahan
