Hi Troy,
As I understand it Callahan is an anglizised version of O'Callaghans.
In my own case my Grt Grandfather was baptised John O'Callaghan in 1825
in Cork and the name was anglizised to Callahan when he joined the Royal
Navy in 1845, and we have been called Callahan ever since. Also a lot of
Callaghans had their name changed to Callahan as they went through Ellis
island.
On the 'right up' for the Coat of Arms it says "O'Callaghan along with
its
variants Callaghan, Callahan etc comes from the Irish O'Ceallachan a
dimunitive of Caellach......
they were descended from Murchadh Ua Ceallachan a grandson of the king of
Munster who lived in the early 11th century who was the first to transmit
the surname hereditarily.
