Hello. I am researching the Civil War regiment 4th Tennessee
Cavalry (Union), and in Co K of that regiment there was a Private
HENRY CALLAHAN. He enlisted Feb. 25, 1864 at Nashville, and
at that time he was described as follows: age 18; 5' 10" tall; dark
complexion; dark eyes; dark hair; born Bledsoe Co., TN;
occupation: farmer.
Less than six months later he was dead of disease - he died June
17, 1864 at Camp Thomas near Nashville.
His mother filed a claim for a survivor's pension in 1879. I have
ordered those pension papers, but it will be several months yet
before I receive them. In the meantime, I would appreciate any
information about him, or his family.
In particular I am curious about several things:
1) He states that he was born in Bledsoe Co. I have a copy of the
1850 Bledsoe Co. census, and it lists no Callahans. However, he
enlisted on the same day as several other men from Bledsoe Co.
(including my gg-grandfather, Thomas Blalock). So, where was he
in 1850? He was not in Overton Co, according to the 1850 online
census.
2) The book "Sequatchie Valley Soldiers in the Civil War" by Jerry
Blevins lists a Henry Callahan in its Appendix. However, this says
"43rd TN Inf POW/ Paroled Vicksburg Bledsoe"
which seems to be referencing a Confederate Henry Callahan from
Bledsoe Co.!
Any clarification would be appreciated
Thank you
