It appears that all Callaghans in the US are spelt Callahan. Does anyone
know why this is and if there is any consistancy to where the various
spellings originate (eg Callaghan, Calligan, Callahan etc) or is it just
down to transcription error?

Tim, I heard through my grandmother that it was a prejudice issue in the past. They also
dropped the O from the original name... O'Callahan or O'Callaghan so they would
not "sound" so Irish and not be judged in an unkind manner as many Irishmen
were. ??? One of her favorite stories was about a sign in a bar... "No Dogs or
Irishmen Allowed"...
I can see after looking at the ships logs how the G could be left off of some of the
spellings, as you suggest. They are very hard to read, but her story had much more flare
to it... :-) Unfortunately, it may be true.
