James Patrick Callahan was born in Ireland.
We know almost nothing about him or his wife. What little we know is based on
information provided by his son, James Patrick Callahan, Jr. in filling out an
application for a marriage license and in responding to the 1920 census. He
married Mary Allen O'Donnell, also a native of Ireland. He lived in Henry, West
Virginia when son James was born in 1882. We surmise that James, Sr. was a coal
miner, as son James was later. He passed away sometime before 1918.
James Patrick Callahan Jr. was born August 25, 1882 in Henry, West Virginia. He
was the son of James Patrick Callahan, Sr. and Mary Allen O'Donnell, both
natives of Ireland. He normally went by "Pat."
He married Gertha Mabel Sears, a two-time widow, on April 1, 1918. They had a
daughter, Isabelle Irene Callahan, born December 26, 1918 and a son, James
Patrick Callahan III, born September 28, 1920.
Grandfather Callahan was a coal miner and an officer in the United Mine Workers
Local 2666 in Dugger, Indiana. He attended a number of UMW conventions as the
representative of Local 2666.
Grandfather Callahan disappears
Grandfather Callahan disappeared May 7, 1920. No one in the family saw or heard
from him after that date. According to Uncle Hubert King, who would have been 10
years old at the time, the night before Grandfather disappeared, John L. Lewis,
the national president of the United Mine Workers, came to their house in
Dugger. Uncle Hubert said that during his visit there was "angry talk about
money being missing." It is believed that Grandfather Callahan either skipped
town or met with unfortunate circumstances at the hands of person or persons
unknown.
