This is a long story but may be of interest.It is from an early history
of Wayne,Pike and Monroe Counties ,Pa. John Callahan,my
grandfather, from Coolbaugh operated the Pocono Heights House. He was
born in Coolbaugh in 1844,a son of Daniel and Catherine
(Glavin)Callahan.The father a native of Ireland,born in County Cork,in
1813,the son of Daniel and Mrgaret(Welsh)Call- ahan,who were
natives of Ireland and emigrated to America in 1827,locating first in
NY,where they spent some time. The grandfather(Daniel) settled
in Coolbaugh after they came to Monroe County. Hedied suddenly. He and
his wife had six children: (1)John,unmarried,died at age 40;(2)Jeremiah
married Mary Yetter,theymoved to Scranton and then to
Chicago,Ill.(their children;Thomas,WilliamDaniel,Abraham,and
John,resident of Chicago,Mary,Margaret married and lived out
west(?),Julia who was a nun,Elizabeth a nun in Indiana;(3)Margaret who
married Daniel Buckley,also a native of Ireland,
both died in Coolbaugh,their children,John,Jeremiah,William and
James,twins,Catherine who married Jeremiah Gupping of Wayne County and
Mary;(4)Annie married Henry Long ofPhila.Pa and made their home in Wayne
County,Harriet wife of Edward Barnes of FortDodge,Iowa,Mrs Margaret
Jacks of Iowa,Ellen eho lived in Iowa,Frank lived in Wayne County and
Jennie a resident of Wayne County;(5) Ellen married David Burke,located
in Monroe County Near Wayne County then later moved to Horn-
ellsville,NY,they left three children;John whomarried and settled in
Bradford County,William located in NY and Mary who married M.McCarty
settled in NY. (6)Daniel completes the family. Daniel
married Catherine Glavin of NY,a daughter of Jeremiah Glavin a native of
NY and spent his last days in Coolbaugh Catherein died in 1866 and
Daniel made his home in Chicago after she died;he was still living in
1900 age 84.Their six children all born in Coolbaugh: (a)Daniel born
in 1846 married Mary Kintz of Paradise,they located at Tobyhanna,the wfe
Mary(Kintz)died leaving tree children Clinton,James,and Mabel.Daniel
married a 2nd time to Jennie Bois of
Delaware,they had one son Edgar.(b)Margaret married Fred Gorman tey
had two sons Fred and Ralph,(c)Mary married Patrick Cockran,they lived
in Chi- cago,they had two sons Charles and Edward,(d)Ellen married
Thomas O'Don- ald of Scranton,(e)John,my grandfather,served in the
Civil War,in 1875 he married Matilda Young born in NY in 1855,hey had
two sons John(my father) and William. I recall stories my
father told of his father and Uncle Dan visiting relatives in
Chicago.Perhaps after all these years we are tracking one of the
Callahan clans.. Regards to all.
