Judy, is your William the one who was in Perry County KY, who said he was born in TN? I
corresponded for a while with Tony Callahan, a descendant of William. I told him about my
theory of William belonging to Isaac, and sent him a picture of my grandfather who was a
grt grandson of Isaac, "the Fiddler" Callahan. He wrote back that he was
sitting there with chills running all over him -- he said my grandfather looked just like
himself. Grandpa was William Davidson, and does not resemble any of the other
Davidson's I'm descended from (I have 3 lines from them. Mother and Dad were both
Davidsons, and 4th cousins to each other. I am my own 5th cousin!) There is some
Cherokee in Edward's family. It came from Susannah, his wife, for sure. Not positive
about Edward's family. Grandpa, as well as my mother, havve Indian features. I was
asked what tribe she belonged with when someone saw her picture. For years I've
looked for a Charles Callahan/Calihan/Calaham, etc., etc. So far, none to be found. I
think it was Roane County TN, I was told to look in. I didn't find anything there,
but didn't look real hard. I've also chased descendants of Rev. soldieer, Joel
Callahan, around. He came from somewhere in VA, to eastern TN, then into Greenville
Dist. SC. Descendants ended up in Buncombe and Yancey Counties, NC. One of his sons,
Joel, (he remained in Yancey County) gave a deposition for my grtgrt uncle, Joseph G.
Allen's Civil War pension. Two, or three, of Joel's brothers (at least we believe
them to be from this line), ended up in Owsley County KY, and lived near other Edward
Callahan descendants in Owsley, Clay and Jackson Counties, KY. Jackson is my home county.
There was even an Ezekiel in the mix. My first boyfriend was descended from two
brothers, William and John, from this line. Let me know what yo think (or know
<grin>). Wouldn't it be GREAT if we could finally solve some Callahan problems
?!?
Still searchin'!

Joyce,
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, I missed the NC after Rockingham and was
thinking VA. Actually, Charles may have been born in NC since the area that
became Jeff.Co, TN was part of NC before 1789. I didn't find anything in my
brief NC search (need to delve into those records further). A Jefferson
Co., TN researcher suggested I look in Augusta Co., VA since a lot of the
early settlers to Jeff. came from there. I have seen your Edward and Darby
in my research some years ago (Haven't worked on the Callahan family for a
few years since becoming discouraged after trying to get through my "brick
wall" for so long.) I sent this in an email to some cousins working on our
Callahans:
"Trying to get further back and establish some documentation for Charles as
William's father, I have been looking at North Carolina Callahans (I cannot
believe the number of ways that name is spelled!) and have found no William,
Thomas or Charles (common names), but unusual names like Darby, Cornelius,
and Ezekiel to name a few."
My Callahans also moved to Missouri, Lafayette & Gentry counties, and
eventually settled in Buchanan Co. on the MO River, just across the border
from KS. Seems like I remember seeing the name Isaac Callahan. I'll have
to get my Callahan records out and begin digging again.
I hope we can stay in touch. I'm hopeful that somewhere there is a link
between our two families. Thanks again for the contact.
All the best,
Judy

Hi Judy, I was speaking of Rockingham County NC. Did you think I meant VA?
My Edward had a son, William, b c1768. He came to Clay County KY with his
parents and siblings, but moved on to Missouri. I'm not sure just when.
There was a younger William Calihan, born c1805, or 1806 (slightly different
spelling) who lived in Perry County KY (take from Clay County 1820). His
researchers believe his father was Charles Calihan from TN. I've wondered
if his father was my Isaac from an unknown 1st wife. This William's
children's names correspond with those of Isaac's sons. One of them even
named Edward. Of course, I may be wrong.(grin) I don't have the county
name, but I believe it was in eastern TN, where Charles lived. I have not
heard of any named Thomas.
Best wishes,
Joyce
