Usually, over in Ireland they use the spelling with the "G" . Most of the
Callaghan's in USA dropped the G
after some time in USA. MY grandfather was born in USA with a G but later
the whole family dropped the G.
The original name was most likely O'Callaghan in Ireland, then later most
dropped the O

This is probably a very dumb question to those who have been doing
research for a long time but here goes - should I use all spellings of Callahan ie
Callaghan, O'Callahan etc. when doing my research even though at this
point all the documentation (which is only US New Jersey census and a couple of
US New Jersey death certs) show the spelling Callahan? I don't know if the
name was the same in Ireland or was changed as I have not been able to
move beyond the states and unfortunately all the relatives that would have
known something are long gone.

Subject: Re: [CALLAHAN] Researching Callahans & DNA
Since we finally have some activity on this list, I will post a little
info
that I have learned about the Callaghan's of Ireland. My Callaghan
ncestors came from County Sligo. I went back to the village my
g-grandfather
ame from. Went there several times and got to know the area fairly well
or a Yank and found some Callaghan's that used to live there but moved
away.
had my DNA tested , one of the things you can find out from DNA is where
our DNA traces back to (where do people with similar DNA trace back to)
nyway, I know very little about DNA so I asked other people on a DNA
oard. My DNA traced back to northwest Ireland but I always heard that the
allaghan Clan came from the County Cork area. I wondered how could
someone
rom a County Cork clan be from Sligo. One of the guys that responded to
my
uestions also had similar DNA and told me there were other Callaghan
lans besides the one from Cork. He explained there was a clan from the
Mayo,
oscommon, Sligo area of Ireland (northwest Ireland)
convinced one of the Callaghan's that moved away from my g-grandfather
illage to have his DNA tested and we were a match. It is very doubtful
hat I will ever find paper records that I have been looking for but at
least
ade a connection through the DNA. I quit wondering how and why my
ancestors
ot from Cork to Sligo. Now I have narrowed my search to just NW ireland

Hi Colleen,
I am Mary Palmer nee Callahan
I do know that the Callahan/Callaghan clan did originally come from the
ork. My great Grandfather, John O' Callaghan, was baptised in 1825 at
t.Coleman´s on the island of Cobh (Cove), Queenstown at one time) in Cork
arbour and was married in Aghada, on the borders of the harbour. Our name
as anglizised to Callahan when he joined the Royal Navy in Plymouth,
ngland in 1848.
Just thought I would give you some places to think about, to try and help.

Any and all information is appreciated - especially any insight into the
roots in Ireland as I am at a dead end.
Thanks so much.
