G'Day Richard:)
My Mary Ellen Callaghan would be a few generations earlier- probably born in early
1840's either in Ireland, or USA.
Don't know for sure.
Appreciate the input though. It's a small world maybe we'll connect somewhere:)

Frank,
I have many records relating to Margaret Ellen Callaghan and they all go
back to her birth in Ballydaheen in Mallow 1872. I have nothing from her
birth until she migrates to Canada in 1905. He brother John Callaghan
turned up with 215 records from the North West Mounted Police. From
1880-1885 he servede in the band of the Rifle Brigade and then joined up
with the NWMP in 1885 until he retired as a police Sgnt in 1908.
Another brother Edward James CALLAGHAN b 1874 Mallow, seems to have married
an Ida and migrated to Canada. He turnes up in Fort William, Thunder Bay
with family.
My Margret Ellen Callaghan left Mallow with her mother (Elizabeth nee
Kennedy) after the death of her Father Cornelius Callaghan in Mallow 1973.
They moved to the Mothers family home in Belfast, living at 35 Sevastopol
St, the Falls.
There was a connection with a Hugh GRAHAM. He managed to change a family
will arount the late 1940s' and was refered to as a counsin by my
Grandmother. This Hugh likely married another sister to Margaret Ellen
called Hannah CALLAGHAN 1890 in Inch Nr Downpatrick in Co Down. She was
recorded 1904 as John's next of Kin, living in Downpatrick, Co Down.
In 1905. Margaret Ellen migrated from Ireland and was recorded, living in
Seattle in 1907.
Margaret then moved to live with her brother john about 1908 after
retirement and nursed him (she was a trained nurse) in New Westminster,
Vancouver, BC untill his death in 1931.
As far as I can tell, Margaret Ellen never married and she was a sole
benificiary in John Callaghans will in 1931. She may have married before
arriving in Canada and may even have married after John's death. If she had
married and parted from her husband or after the death of a husband she may
well have reverted to her maiden name of CALLAGHAN as this is often the
custom in Ireland.
I am aware of a family divorce in Canada and a related family will that was
contested in a Canadian courta by another family member?
If Margaret Ellen had married and divorced, do you have a location for your
Margarets' marriage in either Ireland or Canada?
Does your Margaret seem a likely candidate?

G'day Richard,
Ah, I understand your situation oh so well.
Would that I had ANY of the records you mentioned!
My ggrandfather Michael Tobin seems to have just disappeared. And I can't
find anything on his wife Mary Ellen Callaghan.
I don't even know when she came over, when they were married. Don't know
her parents, or any siblings.
Both she and Michael Tobin are brickwalls!!
If I do discover any info that ties her to Cork I'll let you know.
All the best. Slainte' Frank

Frank,
I started researching my Callaghan's 15 years ago and have only made real
progress over the last 5 years. Your Mary Ellen has similar given names
but these names are common in Ireland. I have an extensive collection
for
Cork, mainly around Mallow, Antrim & Down.
You need to find hard evidence before you can make real progress. Have
you a copy of their wedding Cert even from Ireland. A death Certificate
may
well give additional information. I found some help from family myth but
also found that 75% was pure fabrication or extended exageration and a few
cover deceptions. Census records gave the best results if you can find
them
recorded. Most of my best information came from military records and
secondary career/work related research from what I knew about their skills
and work related movements. The manifest and passenger lists for their
sea
journeys can also help.
If you have any confirmed dates for events with names or places I can see
what I have.
