My James died here in PHiladelphia and I found him in Old Cathederal Cemetery
along with 17 other Callaghan's and one Ward. I have been able to identify
and place all the Callaghan's but am struggling with the Ward. Not sure if
her a friend or relative.

Dear Callahan Family Researchers,
Here is a little information I have acquired over the last few years that may
help someone in their research.
>From research in 1978: At that time there were two large reels of film just
on Callahans for the port of Boston. The names were on individual cards and
did not mention anyone else. My researcher looked only for the ones in the
time range i was interested in of 1852.

There were two CALLAHAN families (not related) who started the ice business
in LaSalle, IL. years ago. The one family sold out to the other family,
grandfather of the informant. Later he turned the business over to his
oldest son, John, who ran it until about 1940. The other family moved to
Ottawa, IL.
James A. Callahan, the informant, (who failed to mention his grandfather's
name) was from Oglesby, IL. His grandmother was Catherine Cosgrove Callahan
and she had the following sons: William, Daniel, James, Vincent, Frank and
John and one daughter, Marie Callahan Borneman. They are all deceased. this
was all the information Mr. Callahan could give me on the two families.
Michael J. CALLAHAN (1854-1945) gave the following info in his biography
published in the history of Cherokee County, KS in 1904. He was born in
Lowell, MA to Daniel and Catherine (Thomas) Callahan. The parents were born
in County Kerry, Ireland where they were reared. They came to America single
and were married in Massachusetts. In 1854 they went to Bureau Co., IL (but
not until after Michael's birth).
He does not say where his father died but his mother married a Bartholomew
McDonald in 1857 in LaSalle, IL Catholic Church. In the marriage record it
states that she is the widow of the late Daniel Callahan. At the time I
received this information, the church could not look up any possible death or
burial record of Daniel due to the fragility of the records. Michael was
reared in Bureau Co., IL. The McDonalds went to Shelby County, Iowa when
Michael was 13. His mother died there in Shelby county. At age 15, Michael
left and went to Cherokee Co., KS.
Michael had a brother named John but I have no further info on him other than
he was supposed to have gone to Australia after having a dispute with
Michael.
Michael married Ann Coman, daughter of James and Joan (O'Maley) Coman. I
have a complete list of their children if anyone desires to have it.
If I find anything further on Callahans I will be sure and post it.

HI Folks,
If anyone is interested in Philadelphia Callahan
directory listings for 1894 and 1895, I have a list of
them. There are too many to post, but I can look for
individuals and send replies directly. There are a
number of listings with same addresses, indicating
probable family members and many of the widows have
husband's name also listed.
I am still looking for my James born in 1814, died
1895 and there are ONLY 29 James listed in 1894....
In case anyone is looking for a John, there are 40 of
them!
Don't we all just love the challenge!

US or Ireland. They had a least one child James Buchanan Tobin b in 1862.
Do you perhaps have info on your ggrandfather John Callaghan's parents and
brothers and sisters? Perhaps I could get lucky! Talk to you soon. Frank
Hi Pat,
My ggrandfather's death certificate says he was a freight handler. My
grandfather
worked for Penna. Railroad. My grandmother had Encephalitis Lethargica also
known as the sleepness sickness. My grandfather died Dec. 8th 1952 and was
buried from St. Gregory's Church. My grandmother died Jan. 17th 1963 and was
also buried from St. Gregory's. I don't remember what section thrir grave is
in Old
Cathederal. I do remember that they don't have a headstone.
Eileen
Well, Patrick Ward is buried with 18 of my Callaghan relatives in Old
Cathederal Cemetery at 48th and Lancaster Avs. I have not yet been able to
determine the relationship, if any to the Callaghans. There is a Mark Ward
who was apparently the son of Patrick Ward who remained connected to
Alexander Callaghan who was the son of John Callaghan and Sarah McFadden.
That is about all I know about the Wards.
Pat Callahan in Philly
Offhand no. I just moved and have yet to unpack my things. I believe that
they lived on Fisher Street in Philadelphia. After the death of John and
Sarah, the children stayed there until they married. My ggf lived in St.
Anne's parish in Richmond area.
Who knows, please keep in touch . We may tie in yet. I always throught it
strange that I could not find any trace of others in the family.
Good Luck

Hi all, it's been awhile since Ive thrown in my 2 cents so I'll just throw
out my info and see if anyone has any connections.
My GGrandfather John, b. 1868 in Rusnakilla, near Inchigeela, County Cork. He
was one of 6 kids. Cornelius, John, Hanora, Jeremiah, Denis and Ellen. (so
far as recorded) We in the family have John, Denis, and Ellen accounted for
for our ancestry, but we do not know what became of Cornelius, Hanora and
Jeremiah.
They were born November 8, 1866, May 8, 1870 and March 29, 1872 respectively
in Toames and Rusnakilla. We dont know if they married, emigrated or just
roamed the countryside in Ireland but we do not have records as yet besides
their birth and baptismal certificates. If you think you may have certain
connections with these people who have these birthdays, feel free to write.
Thanks,
Steve

My ggrandparents Peter Calla(g)han and Jane Mcdermott had 3 childrenThomas,
Anna, and John, John was single and lived with his parents at 4821 Merion Ave.
John died in 1926 and is buried with his father at St. Denis Cemetary in
Havertown. My ggrandfather was born in 1858 in Ireland. His parents names
were Philip Calla(g)han and Ann Sheridan. I don't know if he had siblings. Do
you know what
parish your Calla(g)han's lived. My Calla(g)han's lived in Our Mother of
Sorrows
Parish in West Philly? It's funny we both have John's in our family. I'm
expecting
some Baptismal records from Our Mother of Sorrows, because I want to see
who the godparents were.
Eileen
Well Eileen, My John Callaghan and Sarah McFadden are also buried in Old
Cathederal Cemetery. I have no idea from where in Ireland they hailed. I
don't go any further back than John and Sarah. Could there be a connection?
Who knows?
One of John's children, either Edward or Charles, owned 2 bars here in Philly
which were apparently in the family until not too long ago. One had a boxing
mit out on the sign.
I don't know too much more.

Hello-
I was just checking to see if the
CALLAHAN'S WWW HOME PAGE at
http://userweb.interactive.net/~mailman/index.html
has been ressurected at another location?
I notice that it still comes up with a message
"The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed,
had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable."
It was so full of terrific information that it would be shame to lose all
that work. I would be willing to host a mirror site if monthly cost is a
problem for the owners.

My ggrandfather's name was Peter Calla(g))han I don't know where in Ireland

came from or if he had siblings, but I know his parents names were Philip

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on March 18, 1862 & died on February 14, 1919. (I
believe John's parents were from Ireland.) He was married to Grace Campbell,
who was also born in Pittsburgh on June 03, 1863. They were the parents of
the following children:

1956
Briget Eathed Callahan b. May 15, 1887
Anne Mureal Callahan b. January 28, 1889, d. April 10, 1957
Emma Hildia Callahan b. June 02, 1891

Emmela Ella Callahan b. July 24, 1894
Jennie B. Callahan b. February 08, 1898
John R. Callahan b. February 25, 1906
Anyone have information? Thanks.
Jim
I have a John Callaghan who married Sarah McFadden and settled in
Philadelphia around 1870. Dates are not firm. I know they both died here
in Philly in 1875 as I have their d/c and gravesite info. They had
numerous children, Hugh, Edward, Sarah, Alexander, James (my ggf), Charles
and some others. This is off the top of my head . These are the children I
clearly remember. I've located the gravesite (all in one gravesite), there
are 19 people. 18 of whom are Callaghan's including my fathers sister,
Regina. I have not been able to determine from where in Ireland he hailed or
if had any other family who came over with him. So far, it seems that they
were alone which is strange. There was another person, Patrick Ward, who is
buried with them. Not able to determine exactly who he was but it seems he
may be a friend who either came over with them or who they became close to
here. Patrick's son remained in the picture until much later. The son
lived with the Callaghan's for quite some time also.
Wouldn't it be nice if this was the missing John Callaghan.???? Gotta keep
digging and digging until I have some breakthrough.

Hi,
Corneilus and John Callaghan left Sligo, Ireland and settled in Cincinatti,
OH, this was around 1865. Corneilus sent for his girlfriend back home (Kate
Finan) and she came over and they were married ( I think at Xavier). They
stayed in Cincinatti for another year or two and then went to Elk Point, SD
where another brother Peter was living with his wife and family and several
in-laws. They had one daughter born in OH and then several other kids born
in SD. None had the names you were asking about.
Nobody has any idea what happened to John, he did not wind up in SDakota.
I have corresponded with another lady that had her Callaghan ggrandmother
leave the same village (Gurteen) in Sligo and go to cincinatti approx 30
years later. Gurteen is a very small village and to have 2 Callaghan
families leave that dinky little town and head to Cincinatti is strange. The
father of this girl was Matthew and he had about 13 children. The daughter
that went to Cin and another sister eventually settled in Colorado.
Corneilus had brothers Peter, Martin, John, Mickey (Mike) and at least one
other brother and sister names unknown. Their father was Andrew. I know
what happened to the families of Corneilus and Peter once they settled in the
USA but don't know anything about the others.
