I have put an indexed copy of the 12th century Irish saga about the first
Callahan from the 10th century AD, Ceallachan of Cashel, online at
http://www.geocities.com/kevinlcallahan/callahan.html
Since this appears to have been first translated from Irish into English in
1905 (in Norway) I suspect that not very many Callahans even know that it
exists.
It is kind of a swashbuckling historical narrative and historical romance
with a lot of details about life in the Middle Ages. To print it out is
about 50 pages. Please feel free to download it and distribute it since I do
not know how long the server will exist and this has taken 3 weeks of work
to get up on the web. Also somebody please leave a Visitor comment in the
Guestbook so I know that it actually works!

Here is some more information about this family:
Civil War service:
Rufus may have served in a Confederate regiment (one of the many
that called themselves the 12th TN Cavalry). He then spent a
couple of months in early 1865 in the Union regiment 6th TN Mtd
Infantry.
Nathaniel moved to Illinois shortly before the War, and served in the
87th IL Infantry.
Henry served first in a Confederate regiment, the 43rd TN Infantry.
He was captured at Vicksburg and paroled, then later joined the
4th TN Cavalry (USA), and died of measles a couple of months
later.
Migration:
1850 census - the family was living in Bradley Co., TN
1860 census - the family was living in Bledsoe Co., TN, except that
Rufus and Mary had moved out. Don't know yet if Rufus was also
living in Bledsoe Co. by that time.
1870 census - mother Anna and the younger children had moved to
join Nathaniel in Illinois. However, I could not find them in either
the Franklin Co. or White Co., IL censuses. (I may have
"overlooked" them, since the microfilms were very faint in places,
and I had to scroll through each film, searching for the names, as I
had no index listing to go by.)
Similarly, I could not find Rufus in the 1870 Rhea Co., TN, but
again I was looking "blindly". He may be in the 1870 Bledsoe Co.,
TN census.
1880 census - Wright Co., Missouri - Anna is living in the
household of Ezekiel, Jr, and Nathaniel is living nearby. Rufus is
living in Rhea Co., TN. I cannot locate Jesse in the 1880 Illinois
Soundex.
1890 Veteran's census - Rufus is living in Rhea Co., TN, and lists
his service in the 6th TN Mtd. Inf.
1900 census - Rufus is living in Rhea Co., TN. Nathaniel is living in
Lawrence Co., Arkansas. I cannot find Ezekiel Jr. in either the
Missouri or Arkansas Soundex, and I cannot find Jesse in the
Illinois Soundex.
1910 census - Rufus is living in Rhea Co., TN. He is not listed as
a veteran of the Civil War. Cannot locate Nathaniel in the Arkansas
Soundex, nor the other two.
Any additional information would be appreciated. I am especially
anxious to locate this family in 1870 in Illinois.
Thanks
Jessie Blalock

Dear List: I am still seeking information on the ancestors of Charles D. Callahan, an Air Force Sgt. who died in Pittsburgh in the 1980's. Charles had an illegitimate son in 1932 at Glenville, Gilmer County, WV, by Azalea Woodyard. My daughter, Emily, a Type I diabetic aged seven, is the greatgranddaughter of Charles D. Callahan. I am seeking any info on Charles' ancestors, including photos, in order to be able to tell Emily about all of her ancestors one day. (I do not wish to contact any of Charles D. Callahan's children directly unless they are amenable to the idea, as I do not wish to interfere with their lives in case they are unaware that they have an older half-brother still living in WV.) Many thanks for any info on Charles D. Callahan's ancestors, especially photos! -- Jim Huffman, 1230 Stemwood Drive, Picayune, MS 39466. huffman(a)ametro.net
