HI Mark, Do you have information on your John's sibblings or any family
members who may have settled in Brooklyn? I am loking for info on my
greatgreatgrandfather James Callahan he came to Brooklyn around 1848 was
married to Mary Russell, eventually they owned a store by the Navy yard.
I know callahan is a common name but worth a try. I have not uncovered
any information on James' siblings as yet. James and Mary had several
children one son named John.
I can't believe the Times writer wouldn't help you with his source
information how unpleasant!! Maureen

to all of you researching CALLAHAN, do just look for Callahan. I found
out that my family line was O'Callaghan. My grandfather dropped the "O" and
"g" while living in Boston. My father never knew this and he and I were
raised as Callahan.
Good Luck,

Very interesting post. Thanks. Do you know if John had any older sister's or
possibly an Aunt named Mary Ellen Callahan?
Boy that fellow you called was a real jerk! That's one of reasons I just
bought a farm in Kentucky....fewer of them around:) Good luck Frank

I am... however mine are John Joseph Callahan m Anna Alougue Larkin in 1901.
John came to America by ship from Altheague, Roscommon, Ireland with his
siblings. I'm not sure if his parents came... adn I dont have their names.
But they
came in the 1800's. I have Callahans all over NY and CT. I can provide more
information if you like.

I am from PHiladelphia, Pa. I am a Callahan. My Callaghan's came from the
old famous "somewhere in Ireland" around 1870-1873. Their names are John
Callaghan and Sarah McFadden. They both died here in 1875. They had
numerous children, among them my ggf, James Callahan, His siblings include
Edward, Alexander, Sarah, John, Hugh and Charles. There are probably more
yet to be discovered.
I haven't had any luck finding where in Ireland to go from here but I refuse
to quit until I do.
Pqt Callahan
My great-grandfather was John Callahan (1848-1920), who came to New York from
County Cork around 1860. He married Anne McKeon and set up shop on New York
City's Bowery selling hats. He was called "Callahan the Hatter."
He became famous in New York as the official outfitter of the St. Patrick's
Day parade and had several stores in NYC. We have a good genealogical
history of him here, but don't know which townland in Cork he came from, so
we have no record of his orgins, family in Ireland. According to his death
certificate his father was Daniel and his mother was Mary Hurlihy. In the New
York Times recently there was an article about his business, because near the
125th St. Station of the Metro North commuter rail line a building was torn
down, revealing the side of another building on which a brightly blue painted
ad says "Who's your hatter? CALLAHAN." Somebody had written the Times asking
about the 1880 sign and Chistopher Gray of the Times responded with pictures
and an article about John Callahan. When I called him to find out where he
got his information (maybe some which was not printed) he told me to take a
hike (real nice guy). Only in NY.
Anyone with information on my Callahan would be greatly appreciated
Thank you,

Ben is the best resource for this. He has done a lot of good work on the
family. I have read through a lot of his web site and have put it in my web
site. Temporarily, it might be easier to see the family connections and
information that way. I am providing a link to my web page specifically for
the family of:
James (Johnes) Callahan & Pernnia Snow
Hope this helps!

Does anyone have information regarding a branch of the Callahans that settled
in Pulaski Co, KY. My paternal g-g-grandmother was SIOTHA CALLAHAN, born abt
1837 and died bef 1864. She married MARTIN VAN BUREN BRAY ON 13 Mar 1854 in
Pulaski Co, KY. I believe her parents were GEORGE CALLAHAN, born abt 1808,
and SUSANNAH WHITSON, born abt 1810, area unknown.
Thanks.

so new at this! I did notice that they were using Lovetra(a)pacbell.com and my

any way my snail mail is Lovetra M. Sullivant, Accessible Paralegal, 525 N.

only interest in the Indian "stuff" was that I came across it trying to check out
something else and figured Callahan's, what the heck, it might fit someday. I do
manage to collect some pretty useless information that way, but sometimes it is
like hitting th pot of gold.

William R. Callahan in the 1850 Census was listed as age 8 thus a dob of abt
1842 in the 1860 Census he was age 18 and still living at home with parents
James W. Callahan, our connection to this family is his brother John W.
Callahan.
At Age 18 in '60 he would have been abt 22 in 66 so of course the marriage
you mention on the marriage records would fit, but that is about all the
'evidence' I have to offer. Two other persons on this list have more
information about them than I do I believe Ben Callahan is the best bet for
an answer.
We do not know whether James W. Callahan left Indiana or he died there or
much about the rest of the family. John W. left and went to Kansas and we
think he stayed over, maybe someplace in Iowa, according to some other
calculations we have that seem to fit with some other family members. We
know we have not been able to find the family on 1870 Census records in
Kansas or Nebraska where some of them finally landed.
