Hi Pete
Thanks for responding. Fascinating to hear your tale. You were lucky to get
information in the 18th century. I am afraid 1820 is a bit early for my Mary
Mannix. She will have been born I suspect in 1840s. I am following a lead
that she was from Dromtarriff parish in north Cork, which is adjacent to the
parish of Millstreet where I know her husband John Callaghan was born, from
his military papers I obtained from the Public Record Office at Kew, outside
London, where as a matter of interest his wife was entered as Mary Manners!
It must have been the Irish brogue that was responsible1 A Tim Mannix
married a Brigid Mannix in Dromtarriff in 1843. Mind you Mary Mannix will
have been very young to have married John Callaghan at Millstreet on 11
November 1859. Unfortunately the parish priest says the marriage is not in
the register and he would not let me look at the register as I had not got
the permission of the Bishop of Kerry, in which diocese the St Patrick's
church is located. I have a feeling that Mary Mannix ended up in the
workhouse at Millstreet when her man left for India.
I wonder if anybody on the web can search the Dublin copy so that I can at
least confirm who their parents were?
Regards
Alfred

G'day Alfred
Saw your post re Mary CALLAGHAN nee MANNIX and thought I'd take a punt!
I have James MANNIX born abt 1782, believed to be at Mitchelstown, Co
Cork. James parents were James MANNIX and Mary BAILEY.
James married Margaret DRAKE abt 1814 and they came to Australia in 1855
with three of their children.
James and Margaret are believed to have had a daughter named Mary who was
born abt 1820; Mary did not come with them to Australia.
There is also a belief that James and some other members of his family
were in the Mitchelstown workhouse prior to leaving Ireland in 1855.
Would love to hear from you.
Regards
Pete
