Does anyone have any information on Callahan's of St. Patrick's (now St.
Patrick's - St. Lucy's) of Brooklyn.
My g-g grandfather's name was Patrick Callahan and he married Mary McElroy. They had
about 7 or 8 children -- including a James, Catherine (married Peter Hughes) John, Charles
F., George, Peter (who I believed died as a child) and Patrick Callahan (my g-grandfather)
who married Mary Elizabeth McCloskey. I've been able to collect a lot of birth and
census information through the church and the census records but haven't found any
not previouusly known living connections.
I know they originally arrived in Rhode Island in 1853 and soon thereafter moved to
Brooklyn (from direct obituary information). My g-grandfather was a graduate of Columbia
law school and became an assistant district attorney and was quite involved in Democratic
politics. He was born in 1861 and died in 1928. I have lots of obituary information
saved over the years but I'm so curious as to where they came from in Ireland. I know
that the McCloskey and other families came from Northern Ireland (Antrim and Derry Roman
Catholics) but I'd love to know where my Callahans came from. I'm especially
curious since in a time period when Irish immigrants were struggling to survive my
g-grandfather was attending Columbia law school.....I'd really love to get more pieces
to my genealogical puzzle. Anything sound familiar to anyone??
