I'm so glad you decided to post. Thank you for your very generous offer to
perform lookups in the St Paul directories!
I too have seen my family's name spelled both way. While in Ireland, it was
CALLAGHAN. But once they hit the states, it immediately changed to CALLAHAN.
Now this could simply be a result of misspellings by the "record takers" and
the family decided to simply go with it. My CALLAGHAN emigrants were
literate, so they probably should have known. Remember, names were recorded
phoenetically, and after all, the "G" is silent.
In my own research, I've found it best to search under all spellings. You
just never know how it's going to show up. There are so many variants.
