Dear James
I queried your interest in Irish-born Jeremiah 'Thomas' Fitzgerald Callaghan
yesterday because I actually went to Gravesend yesterday to research Thomas's
wife's family history and I saw his grave!
I have found out a great deal of useful information since I posted my original 'cry
for help' on the message board.
Thomas was in the British Colonial Service and his last posting was as Governor of the
Bahamas in 1881. His health had been undermined by previous postings to Gambia and Labuan
(heat etc). Shortly after his arrival to take up his post in the Bahamas he left for
England on sick leave but after having got as far as New York died in the Metropolitan
Hotel on the 9th July 1891.
His wife who was with him brought him back to her home town of Gravesend, hence they are
both buried there. His wife, Alice, was the daughter of George Matthews Arnold a
solicitor and Mayor of Gravesend 8 times!
If you want more information on the Arnold family please contact Sandra Soder of the
Gravesend Historical Society - look on the web for details. You may also be interested to
know that they are also involved in a project to record all inscriptions on graves in that
cemetery.
Thank you for your interest
Jackie Day
