CHARLES CALLAGHAN RITES HELD MONDAY AT HOME IN BOZEMAN
Funeral services for Charles Callaghan, 82, pioneer of Montana and an early settler in the
Gallatin valley, were held at 9:30 Monday morning from the Holy Rosary church in Bozeman
[Gallatin County]. Burial was in the Catholic section of the Sunset Hills cemetery.
Mr. Callaghan was born in Joliet, Illinois, April 22, 1850, and started west as a youth.
After a few years with the construction department of the Union Pacific at Omaha, he made
his way to Utah in 1870. He remained there two or three years and came to Montana,
stopping at Silver Star, Madison County, where he engaged in mining.
Mining played out in that section and he returned to the Middle West after a few years.
The call of the West remained, however, and he returned to Montana by boat up the Missouri
river in 1880. This time he went to Three Forks where he made his home for many years. he
drove the stage between Three Forks and Helena two years and then engaged in railroad and
highway contracting, mining and merchandising. In 1905, he disposed of his business
interests and farmed in the Gallatin valley. He retired in 1910 to make his home in
Bozeman.
Surviving relatives are the widow, five sons and four daughters, who are Eugene of Helena,
Leo of Bozeman, Lawrence of Chicago, Charles of Seattle, Will of Portland, Mary of
Bozeman, Mrs. Ben Wellman of Chicago, Mrs. Ed Hammer of Billings, and Mrs. John McCabe of
Denver. He also leaves a half-brother, Edward Callaghan of Alaska and 12 grandchildren.
