2001, at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Catholic Church in St.
Regis Falls on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. The Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito,
Bishop of the Diocese of Ogdensburg, will preside at the funeral liturgy with the priests
of the Diocese concelebrating. Father James Delbel will be the homilist. The body will lie
in state at St Ann's Church from 2 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 23. A vigil service will
be held at 7 p.m. in the church. Burial will take place at St. Ann's Cemetery in the
spring.
Father Callaghan was born in Oswego on April 20, 1919, the son of the late Edward T.
Callaghan and Margaret (Hogan) Callaghan.
After graduating from St. Paul's Academy and the Oswego High School he attended St.
Michael's College at the University of Toronto and the Franciscan Houses of Study in
the New York Province. He received his bachelors and masters degrees in English from St.
Bonaventure University. After completing theological studies at Holy Name College in
Washington, D.C., he was ordained on June 9, 1946, by the Apostolic Delegate to the United
States, the late Cardinal Amelito Cigonanni.
Father Callaghan was first assigned to the Franciscan Seminary in Callicoon, where he
taught Latin, French and English literature. He was also appointed Prefect of Discipline
and Vice-Rector of the seminary. He taught for 14 years at Franciscan schools, nine of
which were spent at Siena College in Loudonville. Other apostolates during his priesthood
included Retreat Master to religious congregations throughout the United States and
retreats to the laity.
In 1969, Father Callaghan was assigned as administrator of St. Peter's Church in New
Bremen and St. Ann's Church in Castorland. During this time he renovated both
churches. In 1973, Father Callaghan was appointed pastor of St. Stephen's Church in
Croghan and Superior of the Franciscan Friary. During his pastorate, he completely
renovated the interior of the church and in 1976, produced a historical book covering the
first one hundred years of the arrival of the Franciscans in Croghan.
Father Callaghan left the North Country in 1976, but asked to return in 1979, when he was
appointed administrator of St. Rita’s Church in Deferiet, by Bishop Brzana. He later
became pastor of St. Ann's Church in St. Regis Falls, and its mission of St.
Peter's in Santa Clara. During his pastorate, he renovated St. Ann's and St.
Peter's. In 1988, Father Callaghan retired from active ministry due to failing
health.
Father received permission from the Franciscan Provincial to remain in the Diocese and
offer priestly assistance to the parish. Father Callaghan often expressed gratitude to
Bishop Brzana for allowing him to live out his days as a priest in the diocese. He also
expressed to friends that if he were to have an epitaph it would read: I have loved, O
Lord, the beauty of Thy house.
In addition to his parents, Father Callaghan was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and
Monsignor James Callaghan; and a sister, Margaret Fleischman.
He is survived by two brothers, Edward of Oswego and John of Beverly Hills, Mich.; as well
as twenty five nephews and nieces; and fifty two great-nephews and nieces.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann's Church in Regis Falls.
Anderson Funeral Home in St. Regis Falls is in charge of funeral arrangements.
