Message Board Post:
It's been a little while since posting the previous message and have found quite a bit
more information through the General Register Office of Scotland.
Here is what we have found so far:
Bernard Callaghan was born December of 1842 in District of Rutherglen, County of Lanark,
Scotland. Bernard was the son of Lachlan / Lauchlan Callaghan and Mary Mooney, who were
married abt. 1838.
[Lachlan / Lauchlan Callaghan (father of Bernard) was the son of John Callaghan and Mary
McColl according to his record of death. Mary Mooney was the daughter of Bernard Mooney
according to her record of death.]
Bernard was named after his Maternal Grandfather, Bernard Mooney. In 1857 Bernard was
orphaned due to his father's death which resulted from an "accident in coal pit.
five ribs fractured on the left side", in May (according to the record of death) and
his mother's death during childbirth in November that same year. (The infant
child's name was Mary. Lachlan/ Lauchlan, wife Mary and daughter Mary are all buried
in Dalbeth Cemetery, Glasgow, County of Lanark, Scotland.)
Bernard's Uncle, John Callaghan, then took over the responsibility of raising Bernard.
John and Bernard are found together in the 1861 census at Rutherglen, County of Lanark,
Scotland. Both were working in the coal mines.
In 1862 Bernard married Elizabeth Monaghan who was born April 1844 in Ireland. This
union produced 8 children:
Laughlin Bernard Callaghan b. 09/11/1863 in Rutherglen, County of Lanark, Scotland

Kindest regards,
Debra
