If you have AOL and have not upgraded to 9.0, you may not be aware that they
have created a Spam Folder. The settings for the Spam Folder are arbitrary,
and set by AOL. Often, AOL decides that something is spam if it is going to
a
multitude of people, which obviously describes lists! Even if you're
getting
some mail, you may not be getting it all, and I can almost promise you that
some stuff you want to get isn't getting to you. To remedy this, pick an
option:
Open a browser window (outside of the AOL browser, if possible) and go to
aol.com. Sign in, and go to your mail. Under the box with your regular
email,
there is now a link that reads "Spam Folder" and a (number). Click it and
it
will open another window, listing the mail that they have decided you will
not
get. Read through the subject lines to see what they're blocking that you
DO
want to get. Highlight an email you want, click on "This Is Not Spam" and
WAIT until it's done. You'll know it's done because it will kinda swallow...
:-)
and the highlight will end up at the top of the list again. Do this for
each
email you want to keep. It'll move into your mailbox. When all you've got
left in your Spam Folder are offers for body part enlargement, Paris Hilton
videos, and debt reduction, click "Delete All" and close the window. All
the good
mail will be in your mailbox. You'll still have SPAM in there, too, because
they don't catch everything, but the important thing is that you'll have the
GOOD stuff! Don't bother trying to use the Spam Settings, as it doesn't
work
quite yet.
OR go to Keyword Spam Folder within AOL and do pretty much the same thing.
This option does not work for me, I just get a message saying I'm out of
system
resources. I personally think they ARE trying to force us to upgrade, but
having seen their upgrades, I'll hold for the moment.
You will have to keep doing this every now and then (I do it once every
day),
and you can help yourself further by reporting spam properly, because the
settings do seem to be a little intuitive. From the website, and from (I
think)
8.0 you can just highlight the mail and click "Report Spam", or forward it
to
TOSEmail1 (for spam from other AOL users) or TOSSpam (for spam from non-AOL
users). Slowly, my settings seem to have adjusted to let me get what I want
and
to keep me from getting the REAL spam. Spammers have quickly realized that
AOL is catching on to them, so "Paris Hilton" may get blocked, but "P@R15
H1LT0N" won't, so I've started seeing a lot numbers-for-letters sort of
emails
getting through.
PLEASE, keep this in mind.... Choose "This Is Not Spam" for ALL of your list
mail, no matter what list and no matter what the subject line. You may not
want to read the email, but leaving it as spam can really tie things in
knots.
AOL often goes after spammers, which is good, but by leaving list mail in
the
Spam Folder, you may well be sending AOL after listers without meaning to.
That was long, but hopefully helpful to someone! Shout if you need help.
