The Kalls of the Pfalz
The Palatinate was a large area of Germany that ran along the Rhine River
from the Alps to where it entered the sea in the far north. In Roman times
it was ruled by a Count Palatine, who was a person appointed by the Emperor
to oversee a distant land. The name of the river came from a Celtic word
renos, meaning Raging Flow.
Pfalz is the German name for Rhine and is the name of the present German
state where our ancestors came from. Wars, crop failures, and diseases would
decimate many towns, with some of the survivors fleeing to Pennsylvania were
the land reminded them of the Pfalz.
Kallstadt was, and is, a small town in the Pfalz. Famous for its wines.
About or prior to, 1680 Johannes and Philipp KALL were born in or near
Kallstadt. Their parents are unknown to us and it appears, though not
proven, that they were brothers. Philipp married Anna Maria and had nine
children; Annas last name is unknown to us.
Johannes married Anna Elisabetha Schueller and had three children, Johannes
in March 1699, Georg Heinrich in August 1702, Maria Magdalena in July 1706.
When applying German naming patterns to how they named their children, it is
likely that their father was Johann (Johannes, Hans) Friederich KALL.
Since we are more interested in Johannes and Anna at this time, we will
leave Philipp and Anna behind for now.
Johannes JR named his son Johann Tobias KALL. Which is the first the Tobias
name shows up in our tree, but not the last.
Johannes SRs other son was likely named after Anna Elizabeths father,
however that is also not provable. But we now turn our attention to him.
Georg Heinrich KALL married Anna Margaretha Hensel February 15, 1729 and had
five children. The youngest was Johann Daniel Kall who was born May 1741.
Johann Daniel KALL married Anna Dorothea Schmidt November 29, 1763. They had
nine children, the second one being Johannes KALL who was born February 28,
1766. He had a younger brother, Johann Tobias KALL, whom in September 1799
he named his son after.
This is our immigrant ancestor. Johann Tobias married Anna Elisabetha
Fischer April 21, 1829 and their son Ludwig Tobias KALL was born in November
of that year. They would have three daughters by the time they left for
Pittsburgh in 1836. We will start with that family in my next letter.
