Although I said I'd respond to you off-line, Don, here is some information for the
message board.
Harold John 'Harley' CALKINS was born 1 May 1901 in Wisconsin to Milo and Anna
(WIED) CALKINS<Henry Jefferson CALKINS<Silas CALKINS and so on (see my gedcom on
Rootsweb under user 'PennyS'.) Harley died in Eston, Saskatchewan, in 1946. Fern
remarried in about the 1980s and is still living.
My grandmother was Harley's sister, Milo's daughter.
Regarding Milo -- there is a general view on these boards that he was the son of Henry J.
CALKINS and Sarah 'Melvina' DEY. However, I have several sources that name his
mother as Elizabeth M. HUTCHISON. Henry had three wives; Elizabeth was the second. Henry
divorced her in 1871 as she was mentally ill and he was given custody of his first two
children, Mary and Milo. He married Melvina DEY in 1874 and had several more children.
Elizabeth died in 1886 in the Northern Hospital for the Insane in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. I
have no other substantiated information other than that her parents and an older brother,
Robert, were born in Scotland although she was born in Ohio. Her parents may have been
Robert and Mary HUTCHISON.
Regarding the SHAWs -- it is believed they were early homesteaders near Eston,
Saskatchewan, and that Harley and Fern met there. If Fern was born there the SHAWs would
have arrived before 1910. You might want to check <
www.archives.ca> for land grant
records for that area, which will give you an approximate date of arrival. There is also
a local history book (name of which I don't know) but should be accessable through
interlibrary loan or lookups. Also try the Genweb board for Kindersley, Saskatchewan,
which encompasses the Eston area.
Hope this is helpful. If you wish to chat further or would like reports from my database,
please e-mail me.
