I'm Looking for the parents of John Richardson and/or any other relevant information
about him.
John was born in New York state (not sure about county) on 15 Feb. 1826.
John Richardson was a veteran of the Civil War:
John Richardson age 61 at death
Regiment: Co. E 77th Penna. Vol Inf.
Rank: Private
Enlisted Feb 11, 1862 Musterout 1863
(Discharged on Surgeon's Certificate)
Born: Feb 15, 1826
Died: Mar 4, 1888
Cemetery: Lewis Hill Cemetery,
Port Allegany, McKean Co., PA
Sarah Ann Calkins is buried next to him.
Here's some census info. on Sarah:
1840 Charleston, Tioga County, PA census shows the John Caulkings household:
Males 5-10 yrs. old: 1
Males 10-15 yrs. old: 1
Males 40-50 yrs. old: 1 (John would be 41)
Males 70-80 yrs. old: 1
Females under 5 yrs. old: 1
Females 10-15 yrs. old: 2 (Sarah Ann probably here)
Females 30-40 yrs. old: 1 (wife, Deborah Crawford
would be 35)
Females 70-80 yrs. old: 1
Ten years later from the Charleston, Tioga County, PA 1850 census:
Caulkins John 50 M Farmer 2500 VT
Deborah 45 F NY
E. W. 23 Farmer PA
Emma 21 F PA
Henry 20 M Farmer PA
Alma 14 F PA
Edward 5 M NY
Sarah is not on census. That's because she is now married to John and appears on a
nearby census ...
From 1850 Covington Township, Tioga County, PA census:
RICHARDSON JOHN 23 m NY Farmer $300
Sarah A. 22 f PA
They probably married around 1848-1849, but not certain.
At some point between 1850 and 1860, John and Sarah migrated a couple of counties west to
McKean County, PA. They had 3 children:
Crawford C. Richardson (b. 1854, d. AFT 30 Oct 1926, m. 11 Nov 1874 to Selina A.
Eastwood (also Lina A. Eastwood))
Merton Pardon Richardson (my g-grandfather) (born 23 Nov 1856, d. 14 May 1899, m. 1
Jan 1881 to Alletta M. Eastwood)
Allie Richardson (Grinolds)
Selina (b. 29 Mar 1855, d. & Alletta were sisters. Crawford & Merton were
brothers -- so two sisters married two brothers!
Here's a newspaper clipping on Crawford C. & Lina:
~~~~~~~~~
Lina3 Eastwood, born in Comes Creek; died Oct 30, 1926 in Sattle, Washington. She married
Crawford Richardson 1874; died Aft. 1926.
DEATH OF MRS. LINA RICHARDSON
Mrs. Lina Richardson, for many years a resident of Comes Creek, died at 12:30 Saturday
morning, October 30th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Tripp of Seattle,
Washington.
Mrs. Richardson had been seriously ill for several months, though in failing health for a
long time previous.
She was born on Comes Creek, daughter of Eben and Ellen Eastwood. In 1874, she married
Crawford Richardson and for many years they lived on Comes Creek.
In 1902 they moved west to the state of Washington. During the closing years of her life
she lived in Seattle, Wash., where they have two married daughters, Mrs. Fred Parson of
5727 Ryan St. and Mrs. George Tripp of 5125 Orchard St. by whom she was tenderly cared for
during her years of failing health and last sickness.
Mrs. Richardson was 71 years, 7 months, 2 days old and is survived by her husband, two
daughters, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held at the Advent Christian Church of which she was a member. Interment
was made at Nooksack, Wash. where they had made their home for many years.
Merton Pardon Richardson married Alletta M. Eastwood and they had three children:
Edith A. Richardson (born 29 July 1883, died 10 June 1885)
Earl Alethea Richardson (my grandfather) (born 15 May 1887, died 15 Dec. 1930, m.
Florence Klink)
Ella Luva Richardson (Lippert) (born 23 Sept. 1891, died 31 Jan. 1990, m. Charles M.
Lippert)
While I'm primarily looking for information about John -- where he was born, his
parents, etc., I'm also very interested in learning more about Merton P. Richardson
(Merton Pardon Richardson). I don't know if he was born in Tioga County, PA or McKean
County, PA or someplace inbetween. I don't know where he's buried, either.
He's probably buried in Port Allegany, McKean County, PA in the Lewis Hill Cemetery
with his father and mother, but it's not easy for me to get there to verify that.
John's wife's family migrated through CT, VT and NY. I'm curious if John
Richardson's family's migration path was similar.
I would greatly appreciate any help with this search. Thank you.
Charles Richardson
