For the rare bird that might be researching this branch of the family, I
have put together the following information from family bible, census,
pension and asylum documents. This is more complete than any other
documentation I have seen on any of the gedcom sites. I am descendant
through Spouse 2¹s son, Milo, and can provide information on that line, as
well as sources for the information provided here.
Henry Jefferson Calkins (Born 11 Feb 1837, New York State Died 7 May 1923,
Mattoon, Shawano Co., WI). Buried Clintonville, WI.
Spouse 1:
Cynthia Mericle (1842-1863). Dau of Jeremiah Mericle and Sarah E.
Allen.
Married 21 Oct 1860. Died while Henry served in the Civil War (Aug 1862- June
1865). Buried in Maple Creek Golden Hill Cemetery. No known children.
Spouse 2:
Elizabeth M. Hutchison (1850-1886). Dau of Robert Hutchison and
Mary
Johnston. Born in Ohio. Married 1867. Divorced 11 Dec 1871. Patient in
insane asylum in Winnebago from 1877 to death in 1886. Buried in Maple Creek
Golden Hill Cemetery under maiden name. Children: Mary (1868-?) and Milo
(1870-1964).
Spouse 3:
Lizzie (Surname Unknown) (?-1874). Parents unknown. Presumed
married bet.
1872 and 1874. Believed buried in Maple Creek Golden Hill Cemetery as Lizzie
Calkins¹ in same location as Cynthia Calkins (Spouse 1). Will filed Apr 1874
in Waupaca County Court bequeaths 180 acres of land in the Town of Deer Creek,
Outagamie Co. (NE and SE 1/4 of SE 1/4-29-24-15) to Mary and Milo Calkins,
appointing husband Henry J. Calkins and William Stewart executors. Other
beneficiaries of the will were George Reily Morris and Mary Jane Grossman.
Witnesses: James H. Pine, John Robinson and Amanda Matson of New London.
Spouse 4:
Sarah Melvina¹ Dey (1848-?). Dau of John W. Dey and Eveline Kling.
Married
26 July 1874 at Greenville. Children: John Frank (1875), Ella (1876) David J.
(1878), Henry (1882), Willis S. (1884), Sarah Melvina (1886). Outlived Henry.
Living in Mattoon at the time of his death in May 1923.
