Melba, I can give you what I have.
Sarah Calkins was born in Waverton, Cheshire, England to Hugh and Ann
(?) Calkins. She was baptized in Waverton May 6, 1627. She immigrated
with her parents and the Blynman Party to New England around 1640.
William Hough, born abt. 1620 in Cheshire (town unknown) was in the same
party. Sarah and William married in Gloucester, MA, on October 28,
1645. They had 3 children in Gloucester before the Calkins and the
Houghs again accompanied Rev. Blynman to New London, CT, in abt. 1651.
Their remaining 7 children were born in New London. William died in New
London August 10, 1683. The death date and place for Sarah Calkins
Hough is unknown, but probably Connecticut as all her living children
were there.
The idea that William's father was Edward comes from a record of the
family of Samuel Hough, William and Sarah's oldest son, in the town
records of Saybrook (now Deep River), CT.
Here is the verbatim record from the Land Records of Saybrook, Vol 2, pg
32 (Plimpton pg 31). It was recorded in the Saybrook records on Feb. 4,
1702/3
Samuel Hough, which was the Son of William Hough; which was the son of
Edward Hough; of West Chester in Cheesshir; Was born at New London March
the ninth 1652/3
and was married to Susanna the Daughter of Simon Wropham; at Farmingtown
novembr ye 25; 1769
His Son William Hough was born at Norwich; august ye 22: 1680
His Son Samuel Hough was born at Wallingford february ye 16th 1681/2
His Daughter Susanna was born at Wallingford Novembr ye 27th 1683
Susana his wife died at Walllingford Septembr ye 5th 1684
He was married at Say-Brook to Mary: The Daughter of James Bate of
haddam; august 18th 1685
James Hough: Their Son was born at Say-Brook Decembr ye 15 1688
Hannah Hough Their Daughter was born at Saybrook Novt ye 8: 1691
Samll Hough ye son of Samll Hough died Novembr ye 30th 1702
That is the only reference I know of to Edward. There aparently was no
such place as West Chester in Cheshire. Roy Edwards once told me he
thought that this might have been an ancient name for Chester, but I
know of nothing official.
When this record was entered, Samuel was 50 years old. His father had
been dead 19 years. He had never seen his grandfather Hough. (He
probably saw a lot of his Grandfather Hugh Calkins). To my knowledge, no
one has ever found an Edward Hough with a son William in Cheshire. So
I'm not real sure that William was the son of an Edward. I do believe
that William came from Cheshire though, as most everybody in the Blynman
(or "Welsh") party was from Cheshire, except Blynman himself who was a
Welshman.
If you have information on William's father, and the birth you cite of
1590, I would like to know your source.
