AVOCA - Mark Calkins, 70, of Brighton, native of Avoca, died in Highland Hospital at
Rochester, Saturday, following a long illness.
Born 20 Dec 1889, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs Cass Calkins, who resided in Beagle
District.
He was educated here and graduated from Geneseo Normal School, continuing his education
with extension course at Cornell, Alfred and Colgate Universities.
Mr. Calkins was principal of high schools in Arkport, Honeoye and Lima, and in Leister
from 1928 to 1941, when he retired and became a chemist for Stromberg-Carlson in
Rochester. After five years, he changed to the Atomic Energy Center, University of
Rochester and engaged in research work.
He served in the Army Medical Corps during WWI, and was a member of the American Legion
and the Methodist Church in Rochester.
Surviving are his widow, Nellie Towner Calkins; one daughter Mrs Virginia Curtis of
Rochester, and three grandchildren.
Boy is at the Sheppard VanPatton Funeral home here where friends may call this evening
from 7-9 pm and where the funeral will be held Thursday at 2:30. The Rev. H. Robert Morton
will officiate.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
