FIRST BABY BORN IN LONGMONT
We have been requested by "a subscriber" to tell our readers about the first
baby born in Longmont. We are glad this request has come, for such facts are very
pleasant matters of record.
The first baby born in the corporate limits of Longmont was Miss Etta Longmont Ackerman,
in 1871, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Ackerman. We have been able to get the month. In
her honor the Chicago Colorado Colony deeded one of the lots of the new town to her, lot
8, block 16. She is now living in California, unmarried.
The first boy baby born in Longmont was Ben Calkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calkins, born
Oct. 2, 1871. We all know Ben, so we will not introduce him to a Longmont audience. He is
a bashful little fellow and we might hear from it. Ben is all right and is doing his part
to keep the country moving, for he is with us still.
The second girl baby was John Bellman's daughter, Ella.
Before the colony came and of course before Longmont was known, the lady we now know as
Mrs. Gertude Seckner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Coffin, now secretary of our School
Board, was born, and was the first white child to come into the world in this immediate
neighborhood. Carrie Pennoick was the next arrival and her mother, Mrs. Porter. R.
Pennock was the first bride, and are glad to say is still with us, through Pennock has
passed to the other side.

I am not. It would be nice if this article was added.)
