I am looking for antecedents of Asahel Dunnam CALKIN(S), b. about 1833 in
Elba, Genessee, NY, and d. Dec. 21, 1913, in Iowa.
Think his parents may have been Samuel CALKINS, b 29 Mar 1749, of
Colchester, New London, Conn. (d. in 1812/1815 in Ontario), and m. Anna
Dean, about 1771. However, another source shows an Asahel CALKINS b. 1796
in VT, same parents as above, and married to Asanath.
According to my father (Harry Radford CALKINS), his grandfather, Asahel
Dunnam CALKINS, was a Captain who fought in the Mexican War (I am not sure
this is the right war--he doesn't seem to show up in those records; maybe
it was the War of 1812), and died some time after his return as a lingering
result of wounds. Asahel was "raised by two old maid aunts" in a rural
community near Batavia, NY. He married, when scarcely over 21, Anna Radford
of some place near there, and moved to Michigan.
Can anyone clarify this for me?
