Calkins cousins,
My gr-gr-gr-gr-grandmother, Sibbel Calkins, has long been one of my
mysteries. She married Nathaniel Gillet in Lee MA, 24 Nov 1780. Nathaniel
was b 1758 in Sharon CT, d 1813 in West Lebanon, NY. Sibbel d 1834 in
Cortland, NY, where she lived with her son Nathan Gillet. Family tradition
says that Sibbel was an "Indian", that she smoked cigars, and "lived in
the
yard in the summertime". The story is given credence by the fact that two
branches of the family, one in upstate NY and one in IA, separated since the
1850's, independently preserved this tradition.
Some time ago, I corresponded with Kenneth Calkins about Sibbel. He said
the Calkins Famiy Association database has her descent as Hugh>John>John2>
John3>John4>Simon, m Selah (surname unknown). He suggested that since
Simon's wife Selah has always been something of a mystery, she may have been
the source of the Indian blood.
Does anyone 'out there' have any information on Sibbel and her parents?
