I am new to the Calhoun list and would appreciate any help offered.
My husband's grandfather, Charles Richard Calhoun was b. 1876 (maybe in OH??). He 1st.
m. Effie Mae Perkins 21 May 1896 in Johnson City, Washington Co., TN. She was the d/o
Newton Perkins and Elizabeth Hicks. Charles m. 2nd Mary DeLong abt.1906-1907 in Gurnsey
Co., OH.
Charles' 1st wife died giving birth to their 3rd child. He then left Johnson City with
his 2 sons and moved to Gurnsey Co., OH. His sons, both b. in Johnson City, TN, were Fred
Newton Calhoun b. 12 Sept. 1898 and Ralph Calhoun b. 1901.
Charles was listed as a drayman or teamster (carried goods from area to area in wagons
pulled by a team of horses.) This may account for his having been in the Johnson City, TN
area when he met and married his 1st wife???
After an unsuccessful 2nd marriage, Charles decided to leave (designation unknown) and
offered to take his sons with him. They declined and he was never heard from again.
Because of his love for horses and his ability to handle teams, he may have left to join a
circus. (The family tradition says that he did.)
Anyone have even a slight clue as to the names of Charles' parent? Where he was born?
Where he went after leaving his family????
