In a conversation I had with my father in his later years, I asked him about my family
history. He told me about a Mountain he and the family owned in Kentucky and some stories
about growing up. He told me a little about his Grandfather Barnabas. He told me that his
Grandmother was full Cherokee Indian. I now believe the grandmother he was talking about
was Nancy Rachel Osborne. The problem I am having is no one seems to have any information
about her indian back ground. On the Calhoun family tree site, there is one with the
Contact of Waynema Ziebach. On hers there is a note:
From discussions with descendants of Roby Calhoun, Rachel Osborne Calhoun is said to have
been a full blood Cherokee Indian. Her grand daughter, Bertha (Bertie) Mae Calhoun knew
her very well. Since Rachel's ancestry is obscure and her connection to John Osborne
and Nancy Graybeal has not been proven, Rachel could very well be of Indian blood.
End Note.
In a book written by my Uncle Otey Calhoun (Barnabas's Grandson, James Scott's
son) he wrote on page 44 quote;
My Grandfather, Barney Calhoun, was born in this section and his grandmother was a pure
Comanche Indian.
End Quote.
On the next page he says that on his Mothers side is where he gets some Cherokee Indian
Blood, through the Clarks and the Greybeals.
I would love to hear from anyone with any Information on the Native American Indian
Heritage in the family.
Or of any way I can research and find out more information.
