Sherene,
Thanks for the information.
Based on 1870/1880 census records I have the same children as you do;
except for Isabelle - who must have married before the 1870 census. (I
don't have access to the 1860 census). In the 1880 census Catharine
Calhoun (age 82 or 92 - hard to read) is living with James Porter and
family. Based on this data, I have his father identified as James
Callhoun, b. c1790/1791 in Pa. married to Catharine, b. 1801 in New
Jersey (according to 1870 census records for Ashe Co.)
The "Hurley Families in America" has that their daughter, Amanda Jane
Calhoun (22 Feb 1859-19 Jun 1940) married Lee Andrew Hurley (16 Sep
1855-11 Mar 1935) on 15 May 1875. Lee (according to his tombstone and
immediate family (or Leander-according to the book) is the son of
Andrew and Nancy Blackburn Hurley. Lee and Mandy had eleven children;
the youngest was Ina Ann Okie Hurley (22 Oct 1904-31 Jul 1983). Okie is
my husband's grandmother. The birth dates of Lee and Mandy are the same
as those listed in Okie's bible.
Also according to this book, James Porter and Harriet Wright Calhoun are
buried on Big Springs Mountain, near Apple Grove in Ashe County. The
book doesn't give dates of death for James or Harriet. I haven't found
the marriage in the index I use for North Carolina.
