I found this today, in The Electronic Genealogist:
Hi, and welcome to the 35th edition of The Electronic Genealogist.
Today is November 11th - Veterans' Day in the USA - so I've chosen a
relevant site. It's not a great genealogy site, perhaps, but for
those of you building family histories with veterans of wars past, it
is a site that will give you a great sense of both history and
heroism. You'll find the Home of the Heroes at:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/
...and just in case any of you feel that this site isn't truly about
heroes, you might start by reading this page, about one of the few
living Medal of Honor recipients, Melvin Biddle:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/writers/stories/biddle.html
...or this page, which tells an everyday slice-of-life story about
Lance Corporal John C. Calhoun, a brief story that shows the kind of
character that makes up a hero. Further down the page, you'll read
about that character in more explicit form, when you read the
citation for the posthumous award of the Navy Cross to that same John
Calhoun:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/writers/stories/meaning_of_is.html
And on this page:
http://www.homeofheroes.com/writers/villeplatte/00_cover.html
you can find a compilation of stories about Medal of Honor
recipients, researched and prepared by eighth grade students at
Sacred Heart Elementary School in Ville Platte, Louisiana.
There is more to the site and it's a great place to spend some time
on this day when we honor those - both famous and unknown - who have
fought and often died in defense of our country.
Enjoy.
