I started a response to this last writing of yours, but seem to have lost it in
mid-stream. Anyhow, I do have a copy of Orval's Vol. 2. I find it difficult to
follow the geneology lists, however, and wish he had a better way of moving througj the
generations (e.g., better outline form or traditional family tree format.
I have tried to track Hugh's son William Calhoun's family, as well, but only find
that they moved into KY and points west -- which makes them a possibility too. I am just
so curious about the Taylor name (Sarah Taylor) since Tsylor was my grandfather's
first name, and there are David's, which comports with what vague info I have about
our descent.
Basically after David clahoun and Eda or Eady Ayers, who were married in KY in 1811 ( I
think it was), we have Thomas Calhoun b. 1826; Hiram Calhoun b. 1853 who w/ his 2nd wife
Mary Belle Rothwell had my grandfather Taylor Pagett Calhoun, and his brother Charles.
There was also an older sister, Settie, who lived with them in 1900, but I am not sure if
she was from his first marriage. Hiram had several other children who were from that
earlier marriage. He was about 44 y.o. when my grandfather was born. They lived in
Prestonsburg KY.
Apparently, Thomas fought for the Confederacy and a marker was recently placed on his
grave by the Sons of the Confederacy. He must have been about 35 years old during the
war, so perhaps was too old to be drafted by the Union.
I once found some evidence, however that my great grandfather, Hiram did serve in the
Union army. It must have been during reconstruction era, however, since he would have
been too young in 1861-65 to be drafted ( I would think!).
Thomas had a number of children, and I have some cousins(recently discovered) in KY who
descend from his other children, among who was a son, Andrew Jackson Calhoun. Apparently,
Thomas was unaware that his S.C relative, John C. Calhoun did not like Jackson at all
(resigning as V.P. for that reason, among others).
I have no info on the other children that David (Thomas's father) may have had, but I
would think that is obtainable from KY records (Letcher or Floyd county probably).
Let me know what you find in the later volumes of Orval's book. Also his son's
contact information, if you have it.
I have a feeling that my mother may have communicated w/ Orval after she found a copy of
his book years ago.
Thanks for your help on this --
