OK -- sounds like Civil War records are the way to go. Since he fought for LA, you may
want to investigate in that state. Also, Mississippi records should be consulted. Did he
or his wife apply for a pension? That's where you may find a gold mine.
I'm not aware of any birth records that early. The Handybook for Genealogists says
that some MS counties kept birth and death records as early at 1879; state-wide
registration began in 1912. This is what is listed for Lawrence Co.: Clerk of the Circuit
Court has marriage and court records; Clerk of the Chancery Court has divorce, probate and

Have you investigated the holdings of the Family History Library for Lawrence Co. MS? A
quick look shows a pretty complete list of microfilm and books. Checking out the films at
your local FHC is certainly the cheap and easy way to do long-distance research.
